A preview of a dramatic story

The end of summer, which was supposed to be a peaceful time of preparation for school, became the beginning of a story that no one could have predicted. In the first days of September , Kacper began to lose his appetite, his weight dropped at an alarming rate, his skin became pale, and his weakness was accompanied by painful sores in his mouth and darkening gums. Each symptom on its own could have indicated a short-term weakness, but together they created a picture that caused his parents increasing concern.

The decision to consult a doctor was a natural reaction of concern. However, what they heard on September 18 at the hospital in Szczecin took their breath away. The diagnosis of acute T-cell lymphoblastic leukemia cut through their everyday life with a single sentence that changed their perspective on everything.

The therapy leaves no room for respite.

After the diagnosis, time began to pass at a completely different pace. Just four days later , it was necessary to implant a Broviac catheter, which from that moment on became a constant presence in the boy's everyday life. In a short period of time, Kacper underwent numerous lumbar punctures under general anesthesia and a bronchoscopy, which also required anesthesia.

He had undergone two rounds of chemotherapy, each of which ended in serious complications. The first caused pneumonia and nosebleeds. The second resulted in severe skin reactions after a platelet transfusion, intense vomiting, and a sharp drop in blood parameters. Each stage became another test of strength, not only for the boy, who was going through all this at the age of nine, but also for his parents, who had to find the courage to face the unpredictability of the treatment.

Two worlds separated by illness

The illness has divided the family into two parallel worlds. In one, there is a hospital room where Kacper's mother sits by his bedside. In the other, there is a house where the boy's six-year-old brother waits with questions that no one can answer in a way that he can understand. His longing takes the form of silent suspension, and every day his father tries to balance his professional responsibilities with running the house alone, which suddenly seems too big for two people.

This separation is not temporary. With each passing day, it robs the family of their energy, balance, and sense of former closeness. The illness of one child disrupts the world of the other, and robs the parents of the strength they had previously considered inexhaustible.

Kacper learned the meaning of the words fear, treatment, and survival too early. Our support can make his journey through treatment a little bit easier for him.
