Update

Hubert's return home
After spending 5.5 weeks in the hospital, Hubert finally returned home. He is currently feeling well and slowly regaining his strength after a very difficult period of treatment. The last few weeks at the Institute have been extremely difficult for him and his family. After receiving doxorubicin, serious complications arose, including neutropenic fever—his white blood cell and neutrophil counts dropped to zero. He also experienced visual disturbances, and after blood transfusions, adverse reactions such as rash and convulsions appeared. In addition, a bacterial infection developed, which required treatment with very strong antibiotics, steroids, and pentaglobin. When the situation began to stabilize, another problem arose—the port for administering chemotherapy became blocked, so the doctors decided to remove it. Unfortunately, two days after the procedure, inflammation developed in the endoprosthesis, requiring another operation and cleaning of the endoprosthesis. Fortunately, the procedure was successful.
Next steps in treatment
A week after the surgery, Hubert was finally able to receive another dose of chemotherapy, which had already been delayed by more than three weeks due to earlier complications. The next stage of treatment is scheduled for March 10. During his next hospital stay, Hubert will receive another round of chemotherapy and undergo a lung CT scan, which will be an important part of the preparations for the planned lung surgery. The family thanks everyone for their words of support and for remembering Hubert. March 10, 2026

The moment when the body could no longer keep up

August 2025 did not bring a sudden alarm. It brought something more difficult to grasp. The presence of a disease signaled by the body, which does not ask about age or plans. The diagnosis came after a femur fracture that occurred during a vacation trip while playing tennis. A simple movement, sudden pain, a bone that couldn't withstand the strain. Osteosarcoma with bilateral metastases to the lungs was diagnosed. A fast-growing bone cancer requiring immediate treatment and long-term decisions made without the comfort of time.

Three weeks of waiting and immobilization

After the fracture , Hubert was admitted to the Institute, where he spent three weeks immobilized on a traction device until the biopsy results were obtained. Every day was repetitive and difficult, and his body remained completely immobile. Hubert was put in a cast covering his entire leg and torso, which he had to wear for four months. During this time, he could not even sit up. His daily life was limited to lying down, waiting, and gradually coming to terms with his new reality.

Surgery and the new anatomy of everyday life

In November 2025, extensive surgery was performed. A cancerous tumor was removed from the femur and replaced with a femoral and knee endoprosthesis. The operation was necessary. It opened up the possibility of further treatment, but at the same time began the process of rebuilding fitness, which knows no shortcuts. Since then, Hubert's body has been learning to function again. Movement is no longer a given. It has become a task that requires patience and consistency.

Treatment consumes energy

Chemotherapy according to the MAP protocol continues. Hubert has undergone three cycles. Each of them was very stressful for his body.
He experienced severe nausea, loss of appetite, and extreme weakness. After doxorubicin, there were regular sharp drops in blood parameters, high fever, and painful changes in the mouth, making it impossible to eat.

Blood and platelet transfusions were necessary. Treatment that stabilizes results also halts rehabilitation and depletes the body's resources, which must be used with caution.

The disease has not yet been contained.

The surgery covered the primary lesion. However, the disease is still present. Hubert faces further stages of treatment, including planned surgeries to remove metastases from his lungs. The dates have not yet been set. Decisions depend on his current physical condition and whether the test results allow him to safely continue therapy. There is no deadline for this wait. He only has follow-up appointments and careful checks to see if his body is ready for the next step.

Living in a state of readiness

Ciechocinek and Warsaw now mark the route of everyday life. Home and the Institute. The family organizes everything so that Hubert is never left alone. There is always someone nearby. Someone to help, observe, and react to any sign of deterioration.

It's a life subordinated to treatment. With constant readiness for travel, hospitalization, and changes in plans. A condition that does not allow you to relax, even when things are calmer for a moment.

The younger brother and the house that must maintain balance

Hubert has a five-year-old brother, Adrian. For him, his older brother's illness was an experience that was difficult to describe. His mother was away more often, the house functioned differently, and new rules had to be established. Over time, Adrian came to terms with the situation in his own way. However, the illness remains a part of everyday life for the whole family.

Who is Hubert outside of medicine?

Soccer, the gym, meeting up with friends. Being active was a natural part of his everyday life. Today, his rhythm is dictated by treatment. Instead of training sessions, there are rehabilitation exercises; instead of spontaneous outings, there are appointments for tests and checkups. It's a difficult change for a young man who was just beginning to build his adult life.

Why this fundraiser is necessary

Hubert faces long months of treatment, rehabilitation, and further hospitalizations. Regular trips to Warsaw, specialized rehabilitation equipment, and intensive work on regaining his fitness are essential.
