The illness returned after a period of remission.
Arek's illness began on March 6, 2022. The boy suddenly stopped standing on one leg. His parents took him to the emergency room, not expecting to hear a diagnosis that would change their lives. Tests revealed bone cancer. Arek was first admitted to the surgery ward, and on April 1, 2022, he began treatment in the pediatric oncology ward. A day later, on April 2, 2022, he received his first chemotherapy.
Arek underwent chemotherapy until July 2023. From August to early December, he was in remission, which gave hope for a return to normalcy. Unfortunately, on December 10, 2023, it turned out that the disease had returned – he was diagnosed with multifocal recurrence of Langerhans cell histiocytosis. The disease left permanent marks. Ark's leg was shortened, and he also developed bronchial asthma. The boy is currently undergoing maintenance chemotherapy, which will last until the end of March.
Treatments, tests, and daily vigilance
During treatment, Arek underwent a biopsy, had a vascular port implanted twice, and underwent surgery to remove an osteolytic tumor from the occipital bone. He now faces months of checkups and regular MRIs, PET scans, and numerous visits to specialists. At the same time, rehabilitation is necessary to minimize the effects of the disease and improve mobility.
The diagnosis was a huge blow to the whole family. The hardest part was the separation and uncertainty as to whether the disease would return again. Arek can count on the support of his loved ones. He has two brothers and a sister with whom he is very close. The siblings spend a lot of time together and give him enormous strength to fight. The biggest daily challenge remains the thought of whether the disease will definitely not return.
Small dreams, great determination
Despite everything, Arek remains a cheerful boy. He loves playing soccer and dreams of being able to return to full fitness and carefree fun with his peers. The funds raised will be used for transportation to medical facilities, rehabilitation, medication, and visits to specialists, which are necessary for further treatment and recovery. Every donation is a real help and a sign that Arek and his family are not alone on this long and difficult journey.
