Waiting for silence in the head and in the results
Antosia has entered her third year of follow-up after cancer treatment. Life goes on in a rhythm of tests, MRIs, ultrasounds and consultations. Every three months the same anxiety and the same pattern: a trip to the hospital, anesthesia, two days in the clinic, waiting. Any signal could mean a return of the disease.
In March, an MRI showed two focal lesions in the liver - sites previously occupied by metastases. A repeat examination confirmed the same. Doctors decided to expand the diagnostics. Before Antosia scintigraphy in the Warsaw Children's Health Center, and then another MRI. In the background a possible biopsy. In the background, constant anxiety.
Small procedure, big risk
Removal of the vascular port was supposed to be a simple procedure. It ended with surgery. The catheter turned out to be innate in the vein. Only part was removed - the rest will stay with Antosia forever. The next approach also required caution - an infection, a cough, a bacterium that could cause meningitis. Antibiotics were necessary. In the end, only 10 millimeters were taken out. What was left carried the risk of any fever, any infection.![]()
Disorders that have no name
Genetic testing has confirmed a rare mutation. Heterozygous deletion - the term sounds like a medical cipher. It can remain asymptomatic, can cause complications. No one can predict it. Antosia has speech difficulties, constipation, anxiety. Her mother struggles for answers, though she knows some may not be forthcoming. We are asking for your breath... For help
It's not just about treatment anymore. It's about everyday life that still hasn't returned to normal. About every result that inspires fear. About a child who knows no other life than the clinic, tests and pain. And about a mom who fights every day for a piece of peace. For herself. And for Tosi. July 25, 2024

A body full of tumors
Tosia is only two years old. In such a short time she has managed to learn the entire alphabet of the disease - from the diagnosis of stage IV neuroblastoma to eight cycles of devastating chemotherapy. Her body became a map of pain, on which doctors found more points: a tumor in the pelvis minor, lesions in the bones, head, orbit, liver and bone marrow. No one could count how many foci of the disease she carried. Every day was a battle not so much with one cancer, but with its presence everywhere - as if the cancer was a second body in the body.
Chemo was supposed to save, but took away strength
Treatment began immediately. Eight cycles of chemotherapy. Long months of confinement in a hospital room. The first chemo was a fight for life, the next chemo was an attempt to stop the spread of the disease. There were days when Tosia endured it well. And there were those when she didn't have the strength to lift her head. Her body was too small to withstand the toxic treatment, but too brave to give up.
Her development stopped along with the diagnosis
The main cancerous lesion was located in the pelvis. The tumor put pressure, restricted movement, and took away the ability to move freely. For nine months Tosia could not leave her bed. She did not sit up, she did not crawl, she did not speak. She started walking a month before her second birthday. She had to wait longer than other children for many things. And night terrors - they remained.
Tosia isn't the only one getting sick
Mom was left with her two daughters. Alone. The younger one - Tosia - faces cancer every day. The older one - Hania - has been battling epilepsy for years, and now also an oncological disease. The daily life of this family is check after check, result after result, fear that does not let you sleep. And a single mother who has to be strong for three people.
