The disease developed quietly
Susie gave no alarming symptoms. The disease developed quietly until it finally exploded in dramatic form. By the time she got to the hospital, it was very late. The level of the AFP marker - a key cancer indicator - had reached almost 130,000. The diagnosis: germinal tumor - one of the rarest childhood cancers.
Susie was classified as high-risk. Combined treatment was started: chemotherapy and surgery. At first the tumor shrank, but then stopped - it could not be removed in its entirety.
9 cycles of chemo, surgery and still a tumor in the body
After the first cycle of chemotherapy, it seemed that the treatment was having the desired effect. The tumor shrank by 30%, and the marker index began to drop. Enthusiasm subsided after five more cycles were administered, which unfortunately brought no change in either the size of the tumor or the marker results. The surgery to remove the tumor was also not a complete success. The lesion could not be fully removed. Histopathology showed that the tumor was still active. A decision was made to give her three more cycles of second-line chemotherapy - much stronger than the previous ones. The treatment exhausted her physically and emotionally.
Side effects hurt just as much
During her treatment, Susie underwent sepsis, pneumothorax and several Broviac catheter infections. In addition to chemotherapy, she had to take strong antibiotics and supportive medications. Her body was dramatically stressed. The most serious side effect, however, is bilateral hearing loss, which is progressing. The girl requires immediate parapheresis of both ears. Without this, there could be complete hearing loss.
Locked away from the world she loves
Susie, always full of life, suddenly sank into a world where instead of laughter there was silence, and instead of closeness - loneliness and isolation. For months she could only see her loved ones through a screen. She was alone, sick, too brave for her age.
