A childhood full of challenges

From her first moments of life, Zosia carried the burden of extensive health problems. Diagnosed developmental disorders meant that her journey began with early rehabilitation, necessitated by psychomotor delay. Congenital heart defects - a narrowed pulmonary trunk valve and atrial septal defect- added to her history forever. Immune deficiencies attracted endless infections, taking away the quiet and respite in Zosia's home.

Still, between checkups and medical appointments, she was an ordinary child. She loved playing with her dolls, sticking sand babies and learning to ride a bicycle, making her first shaky attempts. Surrounded by the love of her siblings, every day gave her parents hope that her life was beginning to take on a better rhythm.

Drama hidden in blood results

On August 22, 2025, routine allergy testing revealed reduced hemoglobin and platelet levels.

Zosia was urgently referred to the hospital's hematology department. Initially, it seemed that a blood and platelet transfusion would be enough to get her home again. However, subsequent tests took away hope. Blasts appeared in the blood.

The initial value was first determined to be 3%, only to reach 12% just two days later. What was supposed to be a lab error turned out to be a truth that extinguished hope in the hearts of loved ones by filling them with the weight of fear.

Truth written in the marrow

Detailed diagnostics were immediately started. Bone marrow and cerebrospinal fluid were collected, and further imaging studies were performed. The answer was unequivocal and absolute: 97% of blasts were found in the bone marrow. These numbers left no room for illusions.
The diagnosis was B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

The beginning of a long road

There was no moment to delay. Zosia received her first intrathecal chemotherapy, and with it steroid therapy. At the end of August, the first treatment protocol was switched on, and she faces the next stages, i.e. intravenous chemotherapy and all that this process entails. This is just the beginning of the road, a long and demanding one, where every day will become a test of strength, but also a source of hope that one can emerge victorious from this battle.
