Relentless sarcoma disrupts 3-year-old Teos' development

In August 2023, he began to run a fever and limp on his left leg.

The parents searched for several months for the cause of this condition. They visited several different hospitals for this purpose, but nowhere was a specific diagnosis made. At the end of the year, in November to be exact, they went to the ED at the Regional Hospital, from where the boy was transported to the University Clinical Center in Gdansk.

After several days of detailed examinations, it was finally possible to diagnose the cause of the tiny Warrior's worse condition. The reason was a developing Ewing's sarcoma. Such information is a real shock. Teoś was only 22 months old at the time and is the youngest patient in Gdansk treated for this type of malignant tumor.

From the moment of diagnosis, there was not a moment to lose and on November 14, 2023, chemotherapy treatment began. Initially, our Warrior endured it very hard, and for 2.5 months his parents and Teos did not leave the hospital even for a day. During this period the boy endured numerous immune drops, bacteria and viruses. He had two central punctures and two catheters. Only after his second birthday was he able to leave the hospital for the first time.

The later treatment period was much better.

Currently, Teodor is already in the final stages of chemotherapy treatment, but now he faces the most difficult step - surgery to cut out the bone where the tumor is located. The original plan was to cut out the bone and insert an endoprosthesis in its place, but doctors determined that the best option for Teos would be rotational plasty, or partial amputation of the leg (cutting out the femoral part and sewing the knee to the hip joint, which means shortening Teos' leg and twisting the foot 180 degrees).

After this demanding surgery, our Warrior will need a long rehabilitation and a prosthesis from the knee down. The cost of one prosthesis is about 50 thousand zloty, and due to Theos' age, it will be necessary to purchase several. Home rehabilitation is a cost in the region of 5 thousand zlotys per month, and a walker and rehabilitation equipment will also be needed to get Teos back on his feet faster.
