Genesis of the disease
In May 2024, Richard's life began to follow a path that could not be predicted or stopped. He ended up in the hospital with symptoms that required urgent diagnosis, and subsequent tests began to reveal a picture of the disease developing in the colon. Colonoscopy confirmed the presence of a tumor, and the histopathological result clearly indicated G2 infiltrating adenocarcinoma. The diagnosis of colorectal cancer became the beginning of a long and aggravating treatment.
Development of the disease
A wide range of imaging studies were performed in the following months. A chest CT scan showed changes in the lungs, including a nodule in segment three and areas of milky glass.
Abdominal and pelvic CT scans revealed thickening of the bowel wall, tumor infiltration and enlarged lymph nodes.
Each result revealed the increasingly advanced nature of the disease, which required treatment under a full oncology regimen.
Radiotherapy and chemotherapy
In the fall of 2024, Richard underwent radical radiation therapy with a dose of 25 Gy in five fractions. This stage was just the beginning of a treatment spread over many months and requiring tremendous endurance from the body.
Subsequently, chemotherapy with the FOLFOX-4 regimen was implemented, administered from October to November 2024, and continued from February to May 2025 after a short break. Treatment was complicated by an allergic reaction to oxaliplatin, which necessitated modifications in therapy.
In parallel, the XELOX regimen was switched on, ending in August 2025. Richard's body had to contend with a number of side effects, among them anemia, electrolyte disturbances, hyperglycemia, abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea and vein damage caused by numerous infusions.
Complications that take away strength
Colorectal cancer was superimposed on pre-existing diseases such as type two diabetes, heart failure, emphysema, peripheral nerve damage and jugular vein thrombosis.
The following months saw hospitalizations, the need for intensive supportive treatment, cachexia and significant loss of muscle mass. The body was forced to constantly fight on several levels simultaneously.
The everyday is no longer everyday
Richard lives a lonely life. Due to debilitation and pain , he is no longer able to work or continue his artistic activities, which have been his space of freedom and creative energy for more than thirty-five years.
Today, he struggles for the strength needed to perform basic tasks. Getting groceries, arranging transportation to a doctor's appointment, buying medicine or maintaining his home become challenges that exhaust him more than he can handle.
His limited financial resources do not allow him to meet even his most basic needs, and loneliness compounds the burden of each new day.
