Diagnosis, treatment and recurrence
In 2015, Patricia heard a diagnosis of breast cancer. A year later, she underwent a mastectomy of her left breast and the removal of twelve lymph nodes. The treatment was difficult, but it held the promise that once the treatment was over, she would be able to return to life step by step. Over the next few years, she tried to organize her daily life, rebuild normalcy and learn herself anew in her body after such a serious procedure. In May 2025, it all started again. On the occasion of another examination , a recurrence and spread of the disease was detected.
Such words leave no room for illusions. The medical name has taken on a concrete dimension in the form of pain, limitations and fear of what the next tests will bring.
Treatment that stops working
Patricia remains undergoing treatment including zoledronic acid infusions, LHRH analog therapy and abemacycline therapy. Each of these treatments is intended to halt the progression of the disease, slow its progression, and allow time to seek further solutions.
However, a recent CT scan showed a lack of response to previous treatments. This means that the therapies that stood a chance for her are no longer working. An appointment has been set for December 23, during which doctors will seek a new treatment plan. This waiting period is marked by uncertainty, as it is already known that the disease is not responding to available regimens, and subsequent decisions will be crucial.
Daily life with pain and fragility of the body
The spread of the disease to her bones has made pain a constant part of her day. Patricia struggles with discomfort in her bones, muscles and joints, and experiences heat waves and general exhaustion. Most acute, however, is how fragile her body has become.
Today Patricia is staying at home, although every simplest activity requires great effort. Sometimes you only have to look at her day to understand the scale of fatigue.
When asked about the biggest daily challenge, she answers with one word -. GET UP!
Motherhood in the shadow of illness
There is never a good time for illness, but for Patricia it is particularly painful that it came at a time when her teenage child most needs stability, presence and a sense that the world is not falling apart. Patrycja talks about herself simply and without any unnecessary embellishments. She is a mother with a teenage child who needs both financial and emotional support.
The disease has taken away her ability to do any kind of professional work. She can't function as she did before, make plans, and provide security for her home as she would have liked. What's left is a daily routine of having to reconcile treatment, pain, uncertainty and the need to be present for a child who is maturing in a reality dominated by mom's illness.
Rebuilding normalcy in small things
Fitness used to be an important part of her life. Movement, energy, working with the body gave a sense of agency, strength and balance. Today, these activities had to be put on hold. What's left are small pleasures that help get through the days. Time spent with loved ones, moments over tea with friends, the presence of people who understand that the smallest gestures can be a support in the most difficult time.
This is not a world where illness fades into the background. These are the days when Patricia searches for traces of her former self in what is still possible, and tries to salvage fragments of normalcy, even though her body and test results say otherwise.
Why support is needed
Treating cancer with spread requires constant access to therapies that are not always reimbursed. The funds raised in this fundraiser will be used for unreimbursed medicines and possible new forms of treatment, rehabilitation, medical equipment, as well as daily life that cannot be stopped, even when everything else comes to a standstill.
This support is more than financial help for Patricia. It's an opportunity to continue treatment, alleviate pain, maintain at least partial independence, and provide the child with a sense that home doesn't stop despite her illness.
It is in this hope that such a day will yet come that all her strength lies.
