We support Oliwia's rehabilitation

Olive is facing an aggressive malignant tumor in the left femur.

As planned, Olive was given 14 cycles of chemotherapy (a total of 100 infusions of cytostatics). Unfortunately, not everything went according to plan.

Due to the bacterial infection recurring as many as four times, treatment was significantly delayed. An intestinal microbiota transplant procedure via gastroscopy and additional hospital stays proved necessary. As a result of bone marrow failure, chemotherapy resulted in thrombocytopenia, anemia, neotropenia and leukopenia in our Warrior, requiring transfusions of blood products in the hospital.

As if Olive's health difficulties weren't enough, everything was compounded by the seven-month hip cast she wore from July 2022. It caused the Warrior Woman to be unable to move or sit up freely, and such prolonged immobilization also required daily injections of an anticoagulant drug.

Also not helping was the lack of immunity, which forced Olive to stay in home isolation. She was forcibly prevented from meeting her friends or attending school, and participated in lessons via the Internet. Such a high level of exclusion from social life, as well as the mental burden of the oncology treatment itself, caused a huge deterioration in the Warrior's mood, making it necessary for her to receive constant help from a psycho-oncologist.

At the beginning of February 2023, Olive underwent a long-awaited operation on a bone that had been destroyed by cancer. The long operation, which lasted more than five hours, yielded positive results, and a large part of the femur, part of the knee and tibia bones were removed during this complicated procedure. They were replaced with a growing endoprosthesis. In the future, the Warrior still faces revision surgery and replacement of the growing endoprosthesis with a permanent one.

As a result of the changes described, Olive had to learn to walk and bend her knee from scratch. At first she was supported by two crutches, but quickly learned to function with one. Under favorable conditions, she is able to move completely independently! Still, arduous and painful rehabilitation is necessary. Interruption of exercise can cause stiffness in the knee, which will be impossible to get rid of for the rest of her life. Subsequent examinations have also revealed features of Achilles tendon contracture with limited dorsiflexion of the foot, which means Olive is unable to stand on her heels. She is benefiting from physiotherapy to gain the ability to move fully.
