The burden of diagnosis
August 2025 brought Natalia's 17th birthday. The middle of summer and the middle of vacation were filled with the little things that make up youth. This carefree time was interrupted by a sudden diagnosis. Primary mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma is one of the most aggressive cancers of the lymphatic system. The disease attacks the space between the lungs, where the most important blood vessels and the heart are located.
It is developing rapidly, It compresses organs, impedes breathing and weakens the heart. For a young organism, it is an extremely ruthless opponent. The diagnosis fell on the family with an enormous burden. It forced immediate action and the start of treatment, which was by design to be long, intensive and difficult.
Struggle without respite
The following days resembled a marathon in which no one had a chance to rest.
- On August 9, doctors removed fluid from the pericardial sac
- On August 12, they inserted a drain into the pleura and took a biopsy of the nodes
- On August 13, VA-ECMO implantation was necessary, as well as the Rashkind procedure, which is used when the body stops fighting on its own
- In the following days, the VA-ECMO and drains were removed
- On August 29, a tracheotomy was performed.
Each of these procedures was a struggle for breath and for another 24 hours to be added to the calendar of life.
The hospital has become the whole world
Since then, Natalia has been staying at the University Clinical Center in Gdansk. At Natalia's bedside, one of her parents always watches over her. Alternately, but with the same concern and hope that tomorrow will bring even the slightest improvement. Each of them fights for their daughter's smile,
drowning out her own fatigue and fear, which returns in moments of stillness. Natalia is currently undergoing immunotherapy repeated every three weeks. It's a long road, requiring great patience and strength. However, the treatment has brought neurological complications, and everyday life has become a trial for the body and psyche.
Home is waiting for Natalia's return
Natalia's family lives between the hospital and home, between the duties that need to be fulfilled and the constant need to watch over their daughter. Everything revolves around treatment, and the rhythm of the day is determined by the hospital schedule. The illness has affected the entire family. The house has become quieter - more attentive. The siblings worry and miss, trying to understand why their world has suddenly slowed down.
