Initially, it seemed that the pain was the aftermath of a minor motorcycle accident a few months earlier.
There were no visible signs on the leg that something might be wrong, no swelling or bruises.
It wasn't until December that Matthew went to his family doctor, who initially also suspected that the pain was due to complications from the accident, but ordered an X-ray.
The X-ray showed immediately that something was wrong, the next step was a visit to the orthopedic ward, where a CT scan with contrast was performed. Then a visit to the ward in Lublin, there a biopsy was performed. A few weeks later the diagnosis was made, Matthew has to face Osteosarcoma, a malignant bone tumor.
Since the beginning of February, oncological treatment was undertaken, 3 cycles of strong preoperative chemotherapy, followed by surgery to remove the tumor along with part of the femur and tibia and implant an endoprosthesis in its place. After that, it took quite a long time for consultations on what further treatment should look like. In the end, doctors decided that another chemotherapy would be administered in a ward in Lublin, then treatment continued in Siedlce. Unfortunately, in the meantime, current blood results deteriorated significantly. After many attempts, it was possible to get Matthew under the care of the Warsaw Institute of Mother and Child.
During one of the follow-up examinations, in late April 2024, when the vascular port was to be removed, a recurrence of the disease was detected.
Lesions appeared on both lungs, and treatment with chemotherapy was resumed. The next stage of treatment was two lung surgeries in quick succession during which the lesions that had appeared were resected. The operations were interspersed with the administration of successive cycles of chemotherapy.
The next stage of our protégé's treatment was to fight an infection that got into the operated leg, it was necessary to remove the implanted endoprosthesis, placing a walker in its place to heal the infection. After a few months, the plan is to remove it and reimplant the endoprosthesis.
The funds raised during the collection will be used for the cost of ongoing treatment, rehabilitation, travel to the hospital, proper diet and supplementation, and visits to private specialists.
