Update

Amputation has become a necessity
In November 2024, Kamil underwent surgery to amputate his left leg above the knee. Although it was a blow that is difficult to describe in words, it was not the end, but a painful turning point. The fight for health continues, and every day is a new challenge: physical, emotional, logistical. Kamil still has 11 cycles of chemotherapy ahead of him, as well as surgery on his lungs, where the metastasized cancer has been located.
Prosthesis, rehabilitation and a future that depends on help
In order for Kamil to get back on his feet - literally and symbolically - the A prosthesis is needed. Its The cost is about 70 thousand zlotys. Part of the amount - 30 thousand - will be covered by the National Health Service, however. The remaining 40 thousand zloty we must raise ourselves. That's not all. Another pillar of recovery will be intensive rehabilitation - unfortunately, starting next year, the National Health Service will drastically reduce funding for such services. The family will be forced to use private facilities, and that means further costs that are difficult to estimate.
Treatment far from home
Kamil is still continuing treatment in Warsaw. Every trip means expenses for transportation, lodging, food and medication. The family tries valiantly to organize everything, but everyday life is increasingly beyond the capacity of the household budget. In this battle, it is no longer just about medicine, but about keeping hope alive and not losing strength. December 17, 2024

The body gave the signal

In February 2024, a swelling appeared on Kamil's left leg - small, not painful, almost imperceptible. It was not accompanied by any pain, there was no fever, there were no signals that would indicate a serious threat. And yet, something about the image was unnerving. The parents did not let go. They didn't ignore it. Although medically there was no alarm, they reacted as those who feel more than they see react - with an anxiety that could not be drowned out.
It wasn't until several months later - in August - that imaging tests were performed at a Wroclaw hospital. The ultrasound and X-ray results worried the doctors. An oncology consultation was necessary. Even then, the suspicion of cancer was raised.

Merciless diagnosis

Several months passed. In August 2024, Kamil showed up for a check-up at a hospital in Wroclaw. Although nothing hurt, although the swelling was still non-invasive, the doctors decided to look deeper. All it took was one ultrasound, one X-ray, for the tone of conversation to change. There was a shadow drawn between the bone structures that could not be ignored. It became necessary to consult an oncologist, which brought an answer that breaks a person in an instant.

Diagnostics continue

Kamil was referred to the Mother and Child Institute in Warsaw for further tests. During the biopsy, a slice was taken for histopathological examination. The wait for the result lasted an eternity, although in reality it was only hours.

The cancer did not give a signal. It just started growing.

The result was unequivocal. Osteosarcoma. A malignant tumor of bone tissue, located in the fibula of the left leg. Thus began a battle in which every decision would weigh more than anything before.

Chemotherapy - cycle after cycle

Chemotherapy has been included in Kamil's treatment plan - six infusions to prepare his body for surgery to remove the tumor. If everything goes as planned, the surgery will be followed by a return to the hospital and another twelve cycles of treatment.
It's a prospect that is overwhelming and offers no guarantee that the treatment will work.

Specter of amputation still too close

The size of the tumor, its location and the extent of the infiltration mean that no one can assure Kamil that amputation will be avoided. Doctors do not rule out that at some point the entire leg will have to be amputated. Although the plan is to treat the limb sparingly, the reality of oncology can be unforgiving.

After the operation, a different battle will begin

Kamil's treatment is not just hospital, IVs and surgeries. It's also long months of convalescence, rehabilitation and trying to get his body back on track. He will need a specialized diet, supplementation, and regular travel to a hospital hundreds of kilometers away from his family home.

If amputation proves necessary, the family faces another challenge - the purchase of prostheses. First, a cosmetic one, which will help Kamil mentally get accustomed to his new reality. Later - a functional one, thanks to which he will be able to live independently. The cost of buying this type of prosthesis reaches up to 300 thousand zlotys. This is an amount that exceeds the family's financial capabilities.

Let's not let resources run out when every step depends on them.
