The initial signs did not indicate such a serious diagnosis.
Increasing fatigue and a persistent cough, which appeared at the end of 2025, marked the beginning of this story. A visit to a pulmonologist resulted in a diagnosis of pneumonia and the initiation of antibiotic therapy. However, the treatment did not bring any improvement. Weeks passed, and instead of subsiding, the weakness worsened.
Hospitalization brought a breakthrough. A CT scan ruled out pneumonia, and a biopsy revealed the true cause of her symptoms: advanced, inoperable adenocarcinoma of the lung with metastases. The cancerous lesions are extensive. The disease affects both lungs and lymph nodes, making surgical treatment impossible. However, Ewa was admitted to the hospital too late, which made it impossible to fight the disease radically.
The beginning of treatment proved to be as challenging as the diagnosis itself.
After the biopsy, the left lung collapsed and complications requiring urgent intervention arose. Before the body had time to recover its balance, chemotherapy and targeted treatment were started.
The first cycle of therapy caused severe fatigue, nausea, and weakness, which prevented her from functioning normally. Further infusions are planned, after which Ewa will continue treatment with the targeted drug Tagrisso. This therapy will be used for as long as it remains effective.
However, this drug only works for a certain period of time, and no one can predict whether it will be a year or several years. Currently, there is no other targeted therapy for this type of cancer in Poland, which is why the disease remains a constant adversary that Ewa will have to face every day.
It is difficult to maintain the same rhythm of life between the hospital and home.
Over the course of two months, four hospital stays were interspersed with short returns home. This treatment regimen makes it impossible to work and maintain the stability I had enjoyed until then.
Until now, she was the person who watched over the safety of all her loved ones.
For years, she worked intensively, pursuing her passions related to analytical and financial knowledge, ensuring the stability of her family and the realization of their shared plans. Accustomed to responsibility and independence, today she must learn to accept help.
At the same time, there is uncertainty about the possibility of continuing to work and getting new assignments. The disease at such an advanced stage also closes off many forms of securing the future. Ewa can no longer purchase insurance that would protect her family in the event of the worst-case scenario.
The home is made up of a large family whose daily life requires special care.
Together with her partner, they are raising three children and also caring for her sick mother. One of the children requires constant therapy and specialist support. Even before, this family's life required excellent organization. Now it has been put to a test that could not have been predicted.
The most difficult thing is maintaining balance.
The disease saps your strength, and the knowledge of long-term treatment and the associated costs causes anxiety. The coming months will not only mean therapy, but also the need to adapt your life to new limitations.
Everyday life is being rearranged
Not everything can be planned or controlled today. Every day brings a different pace and different opportunities.
What remains is mindfulness towards oneself and loved ones, patience with one's own body, and hope that treatment will allow one to at least partially regain the space in life that has been taken over by the disease.
