The beginning did not provide clear answers.
In the fall of 2022, Aldona's body began sending signals that could not be ignored. Recurring abdominal pain, fainting spells, night sweats, and significant weight loss appeared alongside persistently elevated inflammation markers. The test results were alarming, but for a long time, they did not clearly indicate the source of the problem.
CA 19-9 tumor markers were also rising. Further consultations and gastroenterological and urological tests did not provide any answers. The diagnosis took months, and the uncertainty grew faster than the ability to cope with it.
The operation confirmed the extent of the disease.
The decisive moment came on February 14, 2023. A decision was made to remove the tumors and resume antibiotic therapy due to poor healing of the postoperative wound. An intraoperative histopathological examination changed the scope of the procedure. It was necessary to extend the operation to include extensive removal of lymph nodes and the greater omentum.
Adenocarcinoma of the abdominal organs with the presence of mutations and signs of metastasis was diagnosed. The cancer developed in the course of Helicobacter pylori infection. This was the moment when the disease ceased to be a single diagnosis. It became a process that would encompass his entire life.
Treatment and its price
After cytoreductive surgery, adjuvant treatment was initiated. Six courses of chemotherapy and six fractions of brachytherapy were intended to halt the progression of the disease and provide an opportunity for stabilization.
Then came months of checkups. CT scans, MRIs, observation of changes in the lungs and abdominal structures. New complications arose: a spleen aneurysm, lung nodules, an adrenal cyst, polyps, and changes in the postoperative scar.
Cancer treatment left a lasting mark. My liver reacted to the drugs, my circulatory system requires constant monitoring, and the stress test had to be stopped after two minutes. Second-degree hypertension, fibrosis in my lungs, and the need to take medication on a regular basis have become part of my everyday life.
Living in a state of alertness
Further treatment depends on the results of subsequent tests. Plans include re-testing for inflammation and cancer markers, further imaging diagnostics, and correction of a painful postoperative scar around which disturbing structures are appearing.
Aldona lives in constant tension, between home and hospital. Without family nearby and without the support of third parties. Every visit to a specialist, every test, every transport requires organization and strength, which are diminishing month by month.
Loneliness that hurts differently
The disease took away Aldona's ability to work and changed her relationship with her own body. What used to be obvious now requires planning and conserving energy. There is a paradox in all this. A person who for years lived for learning, thinking, analyzing, and a passion for organizing the world now has to face a reality that offers no simple answers. Chess, foreign languages, travel, and academic conferences have become memories of a life before illness .
What support is needed
The funds raised will be used to cover non-reimbursable medications, visits to specialists, transportation for treatment and tests, and basic living expenses during the time when the illness and its consequences prevent a return to work.
This fundraiser is a plea for stability in a reality that has denied her stability for years.
