The worst part is that I know how it was before. And I know how much I've lost.
Service that was part of everyday life

For years, Adam was a police officer in the Traffic Department of the Warsaw Police Headquarters. He was a valued and respected officer, repeatedly awarded for ensuring safety on the streets of Warsaw and neighboring counties. Work was a responsibility for him and a stable element of his life, which gave him a sense of purpose and agency.

Diagnosis and years of waiting

A tumor of the central nervous system, located within the conus medullaris, was diagnosed in 2018. At that time, Adam was not eligible for surgical treatment. Further observation, regular check-ups, and patient waiting were recommended. This waiting lasted for years, filled with uncertainty and hope that the disease would not progress further.

The pain changed everything.

Over time , chronic, increasing pain appeared in the lumbosacral region. It did not subside, it disturbed sleep and accompanied every attempt at normal functioning. An MRI scan of the thoracic and lumbosacral spine, performed in 2024, yielded an unambiguous result. The tumor had grown. Radiological progression had occurred.

Surgery as the only chance

On February 17, 2025, at the Neurosurgery Clinic of the Medical University of Warsaw, Adam underwent surgery, during which a Th11-12 laminectomy and complete removal of the intraspinal tumor were performed. It was the only available option to stop the further progression of the disease.

Immediately after the procedure, severe pain in the left lower limb and increasing paresis of both legs appeared, clearly more severe on the left side. On the same day, reoperation and revision of the operated area were necessary. The body did not respond as everyone had hoped.

Complications and difficult rehabilitation

Upon discharge to the rehabilitation ward , Adam struggled with paresis of his left lower limb, profound sensory disturbances, and severe neuropathic pain requiring pharmacological treatment. Every attempt at standing resulted in balance disturbances, symptoms of ataxia, and increasing spasticity.

Despite subsequent rehabilitation sessions, his health has not improved significantly. Numbness in the pelvic area persists. During exertion, severe spastic pain and myoclonus occur. Adam tires quickly, and every movement requires enormous effort and concentration.

Learning to live again

Adam is currently learning to move around on flat surfaces and stairs, trying to regain control of his balance and motor coordination. It is a long, painful, and demanding process that requires systematic work and constant care from specialists.

Loss of independence and employment

The disease took away Adam's ability to work. It also took away his wife's ability to work, as she had to take on the role of daily caregiver because Adam is unable to live independently. He cannot bathe himself, prepare meals, or function safely without constant assistance.

The real threat of losing your home

The family found themselves in a dramatic financial situation. The mounting costs of treatment, rehabilitation, and daily living expenses led to rent arrears and problems with paying their bills. The Property Management Department in Warsaw initiated proceedings, and the specter of losing their home became a real threat.

"I'm not afraid of pain. I'm afraid we'll lose the roof over our heads."
Treatment that cannot be interrupted

Adam is currently staying at home, where he undergoes home rehabilitation and private forms of rehabilitation, including medical training, osteopathy, and specialized physiotherapy treatments. He also remains under the care of the Pain Treatment Clinic of the Infant Jesus Clinical Hospital on Lindleya Street in Warsaw.

Doctors clearly indicate that rehabilitation must be continued on an ongoing basis. Regular visits to a pain clinic, neurosurgical check-ups, MRI scans, and complementary treatments, including acupuncture, are essential. Any interruption poses a risk of reversing the progress made so far.

Life before the illness

Before his illness, Adam loved water sports. Sailing, fishing, open spaces, and movement were a source of freedom for him. He was also passionate about cars, especially restoring vintage vehicles. Today, these images remain only in his memories.

Cancer took away Adam's mobility, but it did not take away his will to fight.
Your support may determine whether he will be able to continue fighting for his independence.
