Homecoming and new beginnings
Behind Zosia six weeks of radiation therapy - a difficult and demanding stage, which fortunately went without complications. Now the most important thing is to take special care of the irradiated area at the back of her head and gradually return to strength. However, something special happened in the girl's life during this time. Zosia started school as a first grader in the hospital and was officially enrolled as a student there. This symbolic moment brought her a lot of joy and a sense that, despite her illness, life goes on and she can still learn, develop, and enjoy small successes. After completing radiotherapy, Zosia returned home for three weeks. On October 31, she will begin the next stage of treatment, i.e., maintenance chemotherapy, scheduled to last about a year and a half. However, before the doctors start the therapy, it is necessary to perform an MRI scan of the head and spine, which will take place in six weeks. Its results will determine the further course of treatment. The whole family is waiting with great hope for the news that the image will be clear, that there are no more changes in either the head or the spine.
Small - big dreams
During her stay in the hospital, Zosia prepared a list of things she would like to do after returning home. There are no big plans on it, just small, everyday joys such as staying overnight at her grandparents' house or going to the movies or the zoo with her parents. What used to be a normal part of childhood has now become a dream come true. Zosia also dreams of going to the pool, but she will have to wait a little longer for that – after radiotherapy, she still cannot get her head wet. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for all your support, good word and any sharing of the collection. Thanks to you, Zosia can dream, plan and step by step return to an ordinary childhood. October 14, 2025Second cycle of red chemo
Zosia has had her second cycle of treatment. It was three extremely difficult days - full of muscle pain, vomiting and extreme weakness. Despite the suffering, Zosia was very brave and tried to spend her time as actively as possible.A moment of hope for discharge
Although the test results were trending downward, there was a chance for discharge and at least a short breather outside the hospital walls. Relatives arrived in Warsaw: dad and Zuzia, as well as grandma and grandpa. The family was finally able to get together and enjoy at least brief moments together. Return to hospital After being discharged, Zosia spent only an hour and a half at the hotel next to the hospital. She had time to unpack her favorite toys and choose a bed for herself and her sister. Unfortunately, her condition suddenly deteriorated and an immediate return to the ward was necessary. August 18, 2025
Explore the history of
"A monster in the head."
On June 24, 2025, Zosia came to the pediatric ward with recurrent vomiting. Earlier examinations did not reveal the cause. Only an MRI revealed the presence of a tumor in the fourth ventricle of the brain. From the diagnosis, everything took a dizzying turn. The six-year-old was immediately transported to Katowice. Three days later , she underwent an extremely risky, five-hour operation - a suboccipital craniotomy and laminectomy of the C1 vertebra. This was only the first step in a long battle.
A difficult opponent
The cancer diagnosed in Zosia - posterior fossa ependymoma, group A (CNS WHO G3) - is an extremely challenging opponent: resistant to chemotherapy and prone to recurrence.
Behind Zosia the first cycle of treatment - 6 infusions of chemotherapy, followed by vomiting, headaches, abdominal pain, a drop in leukocytes to zero and antibiotic therapy. Now a cycle is underway with so-called "red chemo" - cardiotoxic, administered with the approval of a cardiologist.
She still has six weeks of radiation therapy ahead of her, more cycles of maintenance chemotherapy and a shipment of tumor samples to Germany in search of the best treatment options.
Family in separation
300 kilometers - that's the distance between their home and the hospital room today. Mom lives with Zosia in Warsaw, while Dad stayed in Twardogóra with his younger sister Zuzia. The separation hurts. Daily life is filled with phone calls, brief visits, tears and longing. Zuzia, hitherto under the care of her older sister, now tries to support her - although for a five-year-old it's difficult and incomprehensible. Parents explain that there is a "monster" living in Zosia's head, which doctors must chase away for good.
