Wojtek would like to run with his friends again

He is passionate about creating comics, which he invents and draws himself.

Before his diagnosis, Wojtek was an avid karate practitioner and a successful competitive swimmer. Always smiling, talkative, and full of ideas, he wants to make his dreams come true.

Unfortunately, in April 2022, a serious illness manifested itself when a pathological fracture of the femur occurred. Preliminary tests showed an alarming change in the femur. Wojtek underwent two open femur biopsies, which confirmed that the fracture was the result of a tumor—an aggressive malignant cancer. The diagnosis marked the beginning of a race to restore his health and save his broken leg from amputation. Wojtek underwent nine cycles of preoperative chemotherapy, after which a growing femoral endoprosthesis was successfully implanted, saving his leg. The operation gave Wojtek a chance to return to full fitness and completely get rid of the tumor.

Wojtek underwent surgery in December 2022, followed by four cycles of chemotherapy, which ended in March 2023. He now frequently attends oncological and surgical check-ups, as the implanted endoprosthesis must be constantly monitored. It also needs to be lengthened regularly as Wojtek is growing.

Extensive surgery and nine months of immobilization in a cast during treatment meant that our Warrior required constant rehabilitation not only for his leg, but also for the rest of his body.

The endoprosthesis covers two joints: the hip and the knee. This causes additional difficulties with movement. Each extension of the endoprosthesis slows down the progress of rehabilitation for some time. Particular difficulties concern Wojtek's knee, which was completely stiff for a long time. Strengthening the muscles in his legs and maintaining good overall fitness are crucial for him, as the endoprosthesis will be replaced with a larger one in the future as our Warrior grows up. All these factors mean that Wojtek requires a specialized approach and many years of arduous rehabilitation.

Despite his difficult situation, our ward is fighting bravely to regain his full strength and, as befits a true warrior, he has no intention of giving up. Some time ago, he managed to return to his peers and is now attending school! He would very much like to be able to move around freely again without fear of falling down the stairs. Running with his friends on the school playground is currently Wojtek's deepest dream.
