The pain did not subside.
At first, it only appeared briefly. However, it returned more and more often and lasted longer and longer. With each recurrence, it took away the hope that this time it would go away, that the body would cope with the ailment on its own. Over time, it became an almost constant companion throughout the day and forced a specialist consultation.
The first visit to the orthopedist did not provide any answers. An MRI and CT scan were ordered. The month-long wait for the results was agonizingly long.
Along with the results came a referral to the Children's Health Center in Warsaw. From that moment on, time sped up.
On December 18, Wiktoria was admitted to the hospital. Two days later, a biopsy was performed. Shortly thereafter, the diagnosis was made: osteosarcoma, a malignant tumor of the lower limb bone.
Reality has changed direction
In an instant, the world of a fifteen-year-old girl ceased to be a space of carefree adolescence. A reality appeared that no one chooses and for which no one is ready. Everyday matters were replaced by fear, a sense of injustice, and difficult questions about the future.
Treatment requires courage greater than age
The language of medical procedures became part of everyday life. Treatment had to begin immediately. Before surgery could be performed, chemotherapy was necessary. Victoria's body reacted with severe weakness, vomiting, and irritation of the mucous membranes. Her blood parameters dropped so low that transfusions were necessary.
It is not a single hospitalization, but returns at two-week intervals. The stay in the ward usually lasts two to three weeks. This is what the reality of the coming months looks like.
The implant surgery is scheduled for the end of March. It will be the next stage of treatment, which will continue after the procedure.
Growing up was interrupted
The disease affects more than just the body. It interrupts education, separates the child from peers, and limits daily activities to the hospital ward. Three siblings wait at home. They miss each other. Between two worlds, home and hospital, parents try to maintain a balance in everyday life.
Support allows you to move forward
The treatment has only just begun, and it has already brought considerable financial burdens. Each subsequent stage involves current costs and those that are yet to come. In order to maintain continuity of treatment, support is needed now. No one should have to choose between what is medically necessary and what is necessary for everyday life.
