Loss of fitness and the beginning of the fight
At first they were "ordinary" complaints - pain in the left hip area, weakness in the leg. Wieslawa was convinced that it was again sciatica, which she had suffered from for years and had learned to live with. Unfortunately, this time the pain did not subside, but actually increased. More and more serious symptoms appeared: lack of feeling in the left limb, increasing difficulty walking, pressure radiating up to the hand. Every movement was associated with excruciating pain, and every day brought new limitations. One day Wieslawa stopped walking - examinations revealed the dramatic truth: the cause of her suffering was a tumor that was compressing her nerves.
Diagnosis: bone cancer, Ewing's sarcoma image
On March 31, a dramatic diagnosis was made: malignant neoplasm of the bones of the spine (ICD-10: C41.2), an image suggestive of Ewing's sarcoma.
Tests revealed a multifocal nature - a tumor in the cervical spine and a focus in the acetabulum of the left hip. This marked the spread of the disease and the need for immediate, intensive treatment.
The operation and the first stages of the battle
In June 2025, at the Mikołaj Kopernik Specialist City Hospital in Toruń, doctors performed an operation: partial removal of a tumor in the cervical spine, along with nerve decompression and stabilization with implants. The procedure was intended to protect Wieslawa from paralysis and alleviate her growing neurological symptoms.
At the same time, oncological treatment was started at the Oncology Center in Bydgoszcz - general chemotherapy and radiation therapy covering both the spine and hip tumor. The therapy continues to this day, with each cycle bringing tremendous weakness, decreased performance and pain. Wieslawa has already had to take morphine since April, and once chemotherapy began, the dosage had to be increased to ease the suffering. The next cycle of the two-week therapy will begin on August 25.
Daily life in the shadow of illness
Wieslawa's life has been subordinated to her battle with cancer. Doctors have issued a ban on walking - her legs are swollen and weakened, the tumor presses on the nerves. Every movement is difficult, and everyday life would be impossible without the support of loved ones. A brother and sister-in-law take care of transportation and injections, daughters support their mother, taking care of shopping, medicines and the house.
Treatment plan and hope
Cycles of chemotherapy and radiation therapy are currently underway, with follow-up tests after each stage: MRIs and CT scans to assess the body's response to therapy. Doctors are also considering the possibility of treatment at a foreign center specializing in Ewing's sarcoma and potential participation in clinical trials. If the condition allows it - there will also be a chance for a bone marrow transplant, which could be the next stage in the fight.
