The body began to whisper of sickness

At first there was only quiet apathy. Oskar tired easily, turned pale day by day, and simple activities seemed to require him to exert an effort inadequate for his age. The parents, concerned about a change they couldn't name, decided to act. During a medical consultation at an outpatient clinic, Oskar was given an EKG test.

The result raised legitimate concern. Additional tests revealed extremely low hemoglobin levels. An immediate blood transfusion and rapid transport to a specialized hospital in Olsztyn was necessary. There, after just a brief physical examination, the first suspicion was made: possible blood cancer.

Diagnosis left no hope of confusion

Oskar was admitted to a specialized hospital in Olsztyn on May 16. The very next day, his bone marrow was harvested.
In the following hours, a central catheter was inserted, as the result of the tests ordered left no illusions. The doctors were sure it was leukemia. All that remained was to determine its type. From that point on, Oskar's life has been lived exclusively in the hospital. The first cycle of chemotherapy began immediately. This is the most intensive stage of treatment, requiring complete isolation and constant medical supervision.

Therapy break

Although the first days of treatment went as planned, complications arose. The liver stopped functioning properly, forcing a three-week break in treatment. It was only after her function stabilized that the administration of cytostatics could be resumed.
Unfortunately, the body's response to the therapy is still cause for concern. Doctors are unsure whether Oskar will be able to continue treatment according to the basic protocol, or whether it will be necessary to change treatment to a protocol designed for patients with a higher risk, i.e. a worse prognosis.

There are many unknowns ahead of them

Three weeks separate Oskar from the end of the current cycle. Only after this time, and after another biopsy, will the team of doctors decide what to do next. At this point, no one is undertaking an assessment of whether a transplant will be necessary and whether the treatment regimen used will be continued. For now, all that remains is to wait. Full of hope, but also fear.
