Daily life interrupted by diagnosis
May is usually associated with the lightness of spring, not severe infections. That's why Nikola's parents watched with concern as successive illnesses weakened their daughter, eventually leading to pneumonia. Ordered tests showed thrombocytopenia, a condition in which the body produces too few platelets responsible for clotting and protecting against bleeding.
The cancer has returned. Previously, Nikola battled acute myeloid leukemia (2022-2024).
It was this result that opened the way for further diagnosis. The results confirmed the worst suspicions: myelodysplastic syndrome with monosomy VII. The diagnosis sounded like a sentence from which only a bone marrow transplant from an unrelated donor could save her....
When cancer doesn't give up
Unfortunately, this is not Nikola's first run-in with blood cancer. She underwent acute myeloid leukemia in 2022-2024. She bravely faced the treatment and won, but the disease returned in a different, insidious form.
Everyday life in the hospital
Nikola is in the clinical department of pediatric oncology and hematology in Olsztyn. Her days are filled with tests and waiting. The girl needs not only specialized care, but also a sense of security and a bit of normalcy in a world that the disease has completely subjugated.
Family torn apart by illness
Nikola has two sisters and a brother. The illness of one of them has become a huge burden for the whole family. Those closest to her divide their time between caring for Nikola and the other children, trying to maintain at least a little balance in this difficult daily life.
The disease has confronted the family with decisions that go far beyond medicine. It has forced them to face financial problems and the need to meet their most basic social needs. The burden of the situation, especially financially, is difficult to bear at this point.
A girl with a passion
Despite her illness, Nikola remains a sensitive, cheerful girl. She loves to paint. The world of colors gives her respite from the hospital everyday life. It is a passion that allows her, at least for a moment, to move into the world of children's imagination, free from pain and medical procedures.
In a world of disease, her salvation becomes the hope of finding a donor and a successful transplant.
