The body gave a sign
The first signal to start diagnostics was a palpable lump in the breast and painful lymph nodes. This happened in 2023. Imaging studies performed after this report, followed by a biopsy, unveiled the extent of the threat.
She was diagnosed with aggressive HER2-positive breast cancer with a very high Ki-67 proliferation index, which was already causing concern with its dynamics at the time of diagnosis.
The following year, the body sent another signal. Severe back pain, which was initially difficult to link to the earlier diagnosis, turned out to be a symptom of metastasis. Tests revealed changes in the bones, including the femur and spinal structures.
Behind the treatment is a great deal of suffering
Since her diagnosis, Maryna has undergone treatment that requires tremendous physical and mental endurance.
Irradiation of spinal metastases at UCK in Gdansk was also introduced, but this therapy did not have the desired effect, as the lesions were not covered by the full therapeutic field.
Maryna is currently receiving chemotherapy administered every three weeks and bisphosphonates used every four weeks to treat bone metastases. She cannot return to radiation therapy because her bones have already reached the maximum allowable radiation dose. He also has regular follow-up CT scans and ultrasounds performed every six months to monitor the progress of the disease and his body's response to therapy.
Comorbidities and complications take away residual strength
Exhaustive treatment has led to numerous complications.Maryna is struggling with osteoporosis and necrosis of the jaw caused by bisphosphonate use.
Every day begins and ends with back pain and nausea and vomiting, which accompany it almost constantly. It is a disease that does not give a moment's rest.
Everyday life that requires the support of another person
Maryna stays at home, but is unable to function without the help of others. Her dexterity is significantly limited, and any movement requires effort. The burden of the disease is also deeply emotional. Along with fear for her own health comes fear for the future of her ten-year-old daughter, who is Maryna's most important motivation to fight.
Her desire is to survive the disease and retain enough strength to be able to hug her child when the pain lets up for a while and when hope comes that treatment can bring stability.
Support is needed
Help is a real support for Maryna in her daily struggle with the disease, which requires constant care, attention and access to medications and therapies beyond her financial means. The support allows her to make it to the next stages of treatment and maintain the strength she needs for the battle that continues every day.
