It started inconspicuously
In May 2023, Martina presented to the doctor with typical symptoms of infection. Enlarged lymph nodes, which are a common symptom of hers, did not cause concern at this stage. In such cases, an antibiotic usually suffices. This was to be the case this time as well.
Unfortunately, despite the completed treatment, the nodes not only did not disappear, but began to enlarge. More signals appeared: night sweats, fatigue, weight loss. Symptoms that could previously be blamed on stress or fatigue now took on a different gravity. Blood tests, ultrasounds, consultations... And suddenly - an immediate referral to "Cape of Hope" in Wroclaw.
A diagnosis that leaves no margin
At the clinic, everything sped up. A biopsy, a PET scan, more consultations - everything happened quickly, as if time knew not to be wasted. The diagnosis that came out left no doubt: Hodgkin's lymphoma. As if that wasn't enough, during the PET scan, doctors detected yet a monstrosity in the ovarian area. Blow, after blow! For Martina, it was a verdict.
Martina was supposed to celebrate her eighteenth birthday.
Instead, she watched her normalcy disappear.
The beginning of the battle
Martina had other plans for that summer. It never crossed her mind that she would spend that time in a hospital bed waiting for the next cycle of chemotherapy.
She never imagined that a month before her 18th birthday she would be watching her hair stay on her pillow....
On August 9 she began treatment at "Cape of Hope."
At first there was disbelief, anger and silence. She didn't want to talk to anyone. She wanted to close herself off from what had just happened to her.
With time, she began to tame the new reality. The warrior in her awoke. She realized that there was, after all, no other way than to fight, that she had to treat every stay in the hospital as if she were going into the ring - to win!
Martyna still has her dreams.
She is not asking for mercy but for a chance.
