When a birthday turned into a nightmare
April 9, 2025 was supposed to be a day of joy - Marcel's dad's birthday. Instead of celebration, however, came silence, fear and tears. On that day, 4-year-old Marcel suddenly felt unwell: he had a fever, was weakened and sleepy. His parents, concerned about his condition, took him to the hospital in Klodzko.
As a matter of urgency, the boy was transported by ambulance to the hospital on Borowska Street in Wroclaw. There he was taken to the ICU, and doctors fought for his life. After three days, they heard the diagnosis that no parent ever wants to hear - acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Fighting for every breath
At the Cape of Hope Clinic, sepsis and pneumonia were confirmed. The first weeks were dramatic - Marcel lay under apparatus, hooked up to IVs and antibiotics. Doctors and parents fought for his every breath. Only after his condition was stabilized could oncological treatment begin.
A daily life full of pain
Chemotherapy has proven to be extremely difficult. Marcel's mucous membranes are irritated, he doesn't want to eat, everything hurts him. The steroids he is taking cause him to have mood swings - from anger to sadness and tears. Sometimes he remains silent for hours, exhausted by the pain and treatment. But even in those moments he can smile when his dad tells him something funny or when he sees a ray of sunshine through the window.
House between the Basin and the Cape
The illness separated the family into two worlds - a home in Kotlina Kłodzka and a hospital room in Wroclaw. Dad gave up his job to be by Marcel's side and watch over him every day. Mom had to return to her professional duties and takes care of the house, which awaits their return. It's a life of separation, constant anxiety and longing. Every day they fight a battle not only with the disease, but also with helplessness.
The next stages of the battle
After the first chemotherapy protocol, the second protocol began, but complications arose - a port infection, a bacterial infection, and then COVID. Each of these moments felt like another blow. Since the end of October 2025, Marcel has been in Cape Hope. His immunity is very weak, so he is receiving glucose and antibiotics in addition to chemotherapy. Doctors hope that once the boy's condition improves, he will be able to continue chemotherapy treatment
The strength of a family that was not broken by fate
The disease has turned this family's life upside down, but it hasn't taken away their hope. Every day they learn to enjoy the smallest victories - one good result, Marcel's peaceful sleep, a smile after a hard day.
