Unexpected onset of illness
The smallpox that Marcel developed in the fall was unusual for his age, as he was already entering adulthood. However, the disease seemed to follow a standard course, until towards the end of the infection he developed pressure in the mediastinum and increasing shortness of breath. These symptoms left no room for delay.
Mom made a decision immediately. She took her son to a hospital emergency room in Jelenia Gora, where the first tests were performed. The results were not reassuring. An enlarged thymus gland and altered lymph nodes were found, and an X-ray revealed the presence of tumors within the thymus gland.
The medical team, aware of the seriousness of the situation, referred Marcel the next day to the Cape of Hope in Wroclaw for detailed diagnostics.
Surprising diagnosis
Tests performed in the Cape and a biopsy cut through all doubt. The histopathology result on November seventeenth confirmed Hodgkin's lymphoma.
It's a moment that no young person can tame. A cancer diagnosis at an age when life is just taking shape brings a burden that is difficult to bear. The teenager experiences it deeply, with a heightened awareness of the consequences and with an emotional strain that touches every dimension of his youth.
The illness came suddenly, interrupting the course of days full of plans and dreams, immobilizing him in the hospital space, with the prospect of treatment requiring time, strength and great perseverance.
This is just the beginning
Marcel is currently staying at the Cape of Hope. On November twenty-first he will begin treatment with chemotherapy according to the established protocol. This is the first step in a process whose further course will depend on the body's response to subsequent cycles. It is an intense, uncertain time, and one that requires full focus on health.
Daily life that has stopped its rhythm
The disease has changed the lives of the entire family. Marcel's mother raises three children alone and works on a contract basis, making every absence from work a difficult choice between duty and the need to care for her son.
The older sister, who is in her twenties, took over the care of her youngest brother to allow her mother to be present with Marcel in the hospital. Every day of this family is filled with care, organization and the presence of stronger emotions as they try to find a place amidst their daily responsibilities.

The funds raised will be used to purchase medications, rehabilitation and medical consultations, which are an indispensable part of oncology treatment. It's help that will ease the burden on a family facing costs beyond its means, and provide Marcel with security in those first crucial stages of treatment.
