It started with a lump, ended with a diagnosis

Margaret's story began like many others - with something that seemed insignificant.
At the end of May 2024, during her daily care, she felt a small lump in her breast. At first she thought it was an accidental thickening that would disappear on its own in time. However, there was an uneasiness inside her - a quiet, persistent one that could not be silenced.

The tests left no illusions. The diagnosis was unequivocal: ductal carcinoma invasive of the left breast, malignant, with BRCA1 mutation.
The doctor's words rang out like a verdict that could not be tamed.

Malgorzata Bastek - collection for treatment

In an instant, the previous order of the world collapsed, and life began to move to the rhythm of hospital corridors, examination deadlines and anxiety about each new day.

Along with the diagnosis came the decision that he could not give up - that he had to fight, even when the body refused to obey and fear paralyzed every breath. Once awakened, the will to survive can lift a person above anything that tries to break him.

The shadow that returned from the past

She didn't expect cancer to affect her as well - especially so soon after holding a vigil in August and September 2023 for her father, who passed away at home from the same disease.
Accompanying him in his final moments left many wounds, but also a great tenderness toward life. When she heard the diagnosis herself a few months later, she already knew what the words meant. She knew what she would face.
The illness and the long treatment left a mark not only on her body, but also on her psyche. Margaret struggles with depression, with a sense of fatigue and anxiety that sometimes come unexpectedly, like an echo of those days.

Each cycle of chemo is a step toward salvation

It took only a few weeks from diagnosis to the start of treatment. Everything moved at lightning speed, as if time had sped up and life was encapsulated in cycles of chemotherapy, tests and consultations.

Margaret began step-by-step treatment: chemotherapy, immunotherapy, surgery, radiation therapy.
On March 31, 2025, she underwent a bilateral mastectomy - a left-sided therapeutic mastectomy with removal of lymph nodes and a right-sided prophylactic mastectomy. She lost a part of herself, but gained a chance at life.

After surgery came radiation therapy and continued immunotherapy, which continues to this day. These are long months of exhaustion, side effects and pain that take away strength, but not hope.

Challenges of everyday life

Chemotherapy and radiation therapy left a deep mark. With the end of treatment came not relief, but new challenges - peripheral neuropathy, hand pain, and muscle weakness that prevent her from functioning independently.
Hands refuse to obey, pain can interrupt sleep, and everyday life becomes a trial of strength with her own body.
Margaret also struggles with diabetes, which makes recovery difficult. Every day requires treatment, control, medication and patience.

Courage in the face of risk

Margaret is facing another operation in the near future - prophylactic removal of her ovaries. The BRCA1 mutation increases the risk of ovarian cancer, so this decision, although difficult, is necessary.
This is another act of courage in a life that has already tested her so many times.

Strength born of love

The illness came at a time when life was finally about to slow down. A few months earlier, Margaret had become a grandmother - it was her grandson who became her light during a difficult time.
Her daughter, with whom she has always shared an extraordinary bond, now supports her just as Margaret once supported her growing up. She helps with treatment, accompanies her to hospitals, and is by her side when strength is lacking most.
This relationship, based on love and gratitude, has become a driving force in Margaret's struggle. Despite the pain and limitations, she still wants to be a support to her loved ones.

In illness, every gesture of support, even the smallest, turns into a breath of relief.
