From pain was born fear
September 2025. Fourteen-year-old Christopher had just started a new school year. Energetic, smiling, with a head full of plans. And suddenly, completely unexpectedly, everything fell apart.
First there was pain in his loins, then in his hip. For a moment there was a suspicion of a possible strain. However, the complaints persisted. A high fever appeared, resistant to any medicine that was supposed to bring it down.
The lymph nodes began to enlarge. They were hard, painful, disturbing. Christopher's condition did not allow to wait any longer. The consultation with the family doctor and the history taken pointed to tonsillitis, so an antibiotic was included.
A classic procedure that in most cases brings rapid improvement. Only, in Christopher's case, it didn't work.
On October 17, his mother made another appointment, hoping that this time the diagnosis would be more accurate and the treatment effective and brief.
Instead, they received a referral to the hospital. The situation called for a more extensive diagnosis, possible only in a hospital setting.
The emotions that accompanied them then will stay with them for a long time. It's a tension when doctors don't yet speak directly, but you can already feel the danger hanging in the air.
Diagnosis
A day later, a decision was made to urgently transport the teenager to Wroclaw. There, everything happened in a flash. A biopsy, a bone marrow collection, detailed tests and a diagnosis that resounded on October 28: anaplastic lymphoma.
Hospital where time passes differently
It's only been a few days since the diagnosis. Krzyś already knows that his treatment will be long and demanding. At this point , the plan is for six cycles of chemotherapy. Will it end there? Today it's hard to say.
For now, he is taking steroids and day by day, with great humility, undergoes the next stages of the designated treatment protocol.
Mother and son
Christopher is an only child. His mother is raising him alone. His father disappeared from their lives long ago - no contact, no support, no responsibility.
Today everything rests on her shoulders. She is in a no-win situation, but giving up has never been an option. She just repeats: somehow, but it will work out.
For the duration of treatment she had to stop working. The disease itself is a huge burden, but even more difficult are those quiet, constant worries: how to cover the cost of treatment when the bills keep coming, as if nothing had happened.
The fatigue and stress she carries can crush her. Sometimes she doesn't have the strength anymore, but every day she gets up. Out of determination, out of love, out of hope, because next to her on the hospital bed, lies her whole world.
