Update
Kacper's transplant took place on July 28, 2022, but since then a number of complications began to arise. First there was graft-versus-host disease (GvHD), which first attacked his skin, making it look like it had suffered a severe burn. The disease then moved to his intestines and liver, causing Kacper to experience abdominal pain, diarrhea and significantly elevated liver enzymes. Just when it seemed that his health was under control, another difficulty arose - this time the transplant attacked his lungs. Kacper felt worse and worse, his saturation was falling, his throat was sore, and he was visibly weakened. Meanwhile, an infection with the BKV virus also joined in, resulting in hemorrhagic cystitis. Just when it seemed that the situation was stable, another complication developed - an infection with Clostridium bacteria. This required a bacterial flora transplant, which continues to this day. Every two weeks, Kacper has to report to the clinic for intravenous medication and follow-up tests. Last winter, the graft disease caused damage to his esophagus, which again forced Kacper to stay in the hospital for a long time. In December, he began experiencing back pain and excessive sweating, which worried doctors, who decided to perform a bone marrow puncture for fear of a recurrence. Fortunately, in January came the awaited result, which ruled out a recurrence. However, this was not the end of the difficulties - there were further complications, this time involving the eyes. An ophthalmological examination revealed that Kacper suffers from dry eyes, which is also the result of graft disease. As of September 2024, Kacper has started school, but it is difficult to predict how long he will be able to continue. Already, his health has deteriorated due to another viral infection, resulting in an elevated CRP and the need for antibiotics. Kacper is still taking post-transplant medications, benefiting from rehabilitation and has begun psychological therapy. Intense and prolonged treatment makes it much more difficult for him to function normally, so every day is a struggle for him to be able to live like other children. October 9, 2024

Just like his peers, he is passionate about computer games.
His favorite titles are Minecraft and Brawl Stars. He is a smart and resolute boy who loves trips to the Baltic Sea, and is especially fond of Rewal.
In September 2021, he started second grade of elementary school. He is full of energy and loves to go crazy on his bike and scooter. One Friday afternoon, while getting ready to go to the movies, Kacper's mother felt a thickening behind his ear. Concerned by the discovery, she immediately made a doctor's appointment. The thickening turned out to be an enlarged lymph node, which also worried the admitting doctor. Our Warrior was referred to a hospital in Trzebnica. After tests, including a morphology, the diagnosis was made: it was leukemia. Blood tests showed leukocyte levels as high as 280,000!
Straight from Trzebnica he went to the "Cape of Hope" in Wroclaw, where detailed diagnostics was performed (ultrasound, chest X-ray, CT scan and bone marrow puncture). The results proved devastating, as the disease had already managed to attack Kacper's entire body. Enlarged lymph nodes were all over the body, with the largest one located in the mediastinum.
The first moments with the disease were extremely difficult. Leukemia treatment requires long hospitalization, and as a result, Kacper spent three months in the clinic. As his mother, Ms. Marta, recalls:
"I couldn't believe that such a severe disease had affected my son. Yes, you hear about oncological diseases, but it always happens somewhere next door. We assume it won't happen to us after all."
The first doses of chemotherapy affected more than just leukemia. The boy had burned mucous membranes in his mouth, making him unable to drink or eat. Pancreatitis also appeared, followed by a femoral puncture infection. However, the following months of therapy brought improvements in his performance and well-being. Kacper was even qualified for a bone marrow transplant, although this one carried considerable risks. In preparation for the transplant, Kacper underwent so-called conditioning - he took eight cycles of chemotherapy without interruption.
A very important day came on July 28, 2022. It was the day of the transplant, and the donor was an extremely brave and fearless woman - Kacper's mother, Mrs. Marta. Three weeks after the procedure, it was finally possible to say that the procedure had gone well - the results had improved! Kacper gained strength, and on September 2 he could even go home!
Although the transplant was successful, the boy still faces many complications from the medications he took. He suffers from skin grafts, burns, liver grafts and intestinal grafts, all of which require a lot of medication and long rehabilitation. Kacper needs to gain strength, as his younger sister Zosia, for whom he is the most wonderful big brother in the world, is waiting for him at home.
Let's help this incredibly brave Warrior and his equally fearless Mom!
