The spring of 2023 brought signals that at first seemed only a temporary weakening. Cuba, hitherto full of energy and natural curiosity about the world, began to fall asleep in class, and lost motivation and interest in the things he had previously enjoyed. It seemed to his parents that this was a stage of adolescence, a moment that was sometimes difficult to grasp and interpret.
Over time, she developed abdominal pain and pallor, becoming more and more apparent with each passing day. It was this picture that prompted the parents to perform an expanded morphology. The results came quickly and left no room for doubt. The doctor recommended immediate medical transport to the Cape of Hope in Wroclaw, where full diagnostics was initiated.
The diagnosis was acute myeloid leukemia. Cuba faced treatment whose severity and length eluded all imagination.
Treatment that required tremendous strength
The first phase of treatment included intensive chemotherapy, to which Kuba's body responded with the hope of improvement. For a long time, it seemed that the treatment was leading toward stabilization.
In May 2025, however, a recurrence appeared. It was not accompanied by any clinical symptoms, and the only sign was a drop in platelets, which directed doctors toward urgent tests. The relapse meant a return to chemotherapy, as well as qualification for a bone marrow transplant.
The transplant has been carried out, and the therapy has come to an end. Now the boy's body needs time to rebuild the strength lost during months of treatment.
The need for patience
Kuba is currently between home and the hospital. He faces intensive rehabilitation and a slow return to a life that has been put on hold for a long time. He is accompanied by a contracture of his Achilles tendon that requires specialized therapy and regular exercise.
He misses most his friends, school and ordinary days, which before his illness were effortless and pain-free. He dreams of traveling and of becoming a steward in the future. These dreams are his compass that guide him through his recovery.
Family carrying his burden
Kuba has a younger brother and a younger sister. Mom had to give up her job in order to be able to accompany her son through every stage of his treatment, monitor his health, and constantly take care of the security that the disease deprives.
Kuba's illness has affected the entire family. Separation for hospital stays, the care of siblings, financial difficulties, anxiety about the coming months, and the organization of life between home and the hospital made everyday life a test of their emotional and logistical strength.
Room for support
Help is a real chance for Kuba to regain his fitness and return to his teenage life, which the disease interrupted too early. The funds raised will be used for rehabilitation, travel to appointments, private medical care and education so that he can make up for the time lost through treatment.
