First clash with the disease

At the end of 2012, Dominika became concerned about pain in her leg. Soon she felt a hard thickening under her fingers. A few months later, after a biopsy, she heard the diagnosis: malignant soft tissue cancer of the lower limb. From that moment on, her life turned into a string of surgeries, recurrences and difficult decisions.

In 2013, the first tumor was removed, but the recurrence occurred rapidly. Subsequent treatments in 2014 and 2015 involved the removal of a significant portion of the lower leg muscles.

Then there was radiation therapy. After a few years of relative calm - in late 2024 - the cancer attacked again.

Years of treatment and subsequent relapses

Since January 2025, Dominika has been undergoing intensive doxorubicin chemotherapy. She already has 20 cycles behind her, with another eight ahead of her and a follow-up MRI. The therapy severely strained her body - nausea, intestinal inflammation, hair loss appeared. In June, a vascular port had to be implanted.

Each surgery and radiation exacerbated the problems with her leg. Dominica was born with a clubfoot and Achilles tendon contracture. Cancer, muscle removal and contractures in the ankle and knee joints have made every step increasingly difficult and painful.

Daily life on the brink of strength

Dominika subsists on a pension of 1,400 zloty. Previously, she worked as a masseuse at a nursing home, but illness deprived her of the opportunity to practice her profession. She now lives with her sister in an apartment lent by a friend.

He commutes from his hometown of Legnica to Wrocław for chemotherapy - each trip is a huge effort and another expense. A weakened body easily catches infections and inflammations, and their treatment often requires private treatments.
