Update

Coming back to life after cancer is a separate struggle❗.
In theory, the treatment is over, but Dominica's daily life is still full of restrictions, fear and uncertainty. She returns to "Cape of Hope" once every six months for a check-up, but on a daily basis her life is subordinated to visits to many specialists. With each of these steps come costs for: travel, tests, medications, consultations. Unfortunately, she no longer receives a pension. The system does not provide support for patients who have completed treatment but are still unable to function independently.
The treatment left traces not only in the body
Dominica's body is still struggling with the side effects of chemotherapy. Weakening, complications, symptoms that cannot be predicted. Any signal that deviates from the norm creates anxiety.
It's hard to start a "new life" when your body reminds you of the past and your psyche doesn't give you a sense of security.
Needs help❗
During her treatment at the hospital, Dominika could count on support of oncopsychologist. Today she is left alone with her fears and mental difficulties. The cost of specialized help is beyond her means, and the lack of support robs her of the strength to go on. Dominika is not asking for much. She just wants to find help that will allow her to regain her balance - the physical one as well as the mental one.   March 18, 2024

Leukemia was a shock and treatment a brutal reality

In the fall of 2018, Dominika became concerned about the persistent swelling in her neck. Her first thought was that it was probably the result of a simple cold. Doctors also suspected nothing serious. Medication was prescribed, she was advised to drink plenty of water and observe. However, the symptoms persisted. Soon there was an infection, then an antibiotic, more tests. And the morphology? "Sensational." So why was the swelling getting bigger!

After a short hospitalization, Dominica was discharged home. Reading the discharge, one phrase made her hold her breath. Suspected thymoma. Panic, fear, black scenarios. Cancer? Uncertainty was eating her up from the inside. In January 2019, she was taken to the "Cape of Hope" in Wroclaw.

The therapy took off at a brisk pace, without asking if the body and psyche were ready.

An avalanche of tests began, biopsies, trepanobiopsy of lymph nodes. This time the doctors suspected lymphoma. The results, which began to flow, "glued together" into a completely different diagnosis. It was neither thymoma nor lymphoma, it was acute leukemia!

Chemotherapy, steroids, devastating procedures were immediately implemented. The body had no time to defend itself. Overnight, Dominika ceased to be independent. Without the help of loved ones, she was unable to sit up, turn around, or simply raise her arm.

No one gave her a chance to return so quickly

Polyneuropathy was a diagnosis that for many patients means months or even years of arduous rehabilitation. Dominika could not accept the helplessness. Day by day she began to fight for every millimeter of movement, moving a finger, lifting a hand, tensing a muscle. What others take a year and a half to accomplish, she achieved in three months. She woke up her body. She stood on her feet. She began to learn to walk again. Not without pain and tears, but with a determination that cannot be described in words.

Rescued, but not free

In June 2019, she heard the longed-for words: the marrow was clean. After more than six months of hospitalization, she was able to return home. She was weakened, devastated, but full of hope.
Unfortunately, the peace did not last long. In February 2021, more symptoms began: back pain, shortness of breath, breathing problems. She thought it was a virus, maybe enteric. But the condition worsened. She ended up in a hospital in Nysa, and from there straight to "Cape of Hope."

Another wave of fear

Doctors suspected a relapse. Water was collecting in the pleura, the tests showed the risk of blasts. Dominica was again on edge. She was given oxygen and morphine, and intensive diagnostics continued. Eventually it turned out that it was not leukemia - but a fungal infection of the lungs and a strong response of the weakened body to previous treatment. The marrow tried to rebuild itself, but again needed support. The fear, although this time it did not have the name "cancer," was equally paralyzing.

The body is in constant revolt

Today Dominika is functioning, but she is far from healthy. The effects of treatment accompany her every day. Muscles and joints are still weakened. Her eyesight, which was supposed to be improving, is deteriorating more and more every month . Neurological disorders, steatosis of internal organs, skin problems have appeared .
At the end of 2022, insulin resistance was diagnosed. This is another silent enemy that requires new medications, tests, consultations and lifestyle changes....

Your support is her real chance

Dominika is still fighting for fitness, for independence, for a life without pain and fear. She needs funds for treatment, rehabilitation, diagnostics and specialists, the list of which is constantly growing.
Let's help her finish this fight. The one she is fighting in her daily struggle with her own body.

Although the marrow is clean, every part of her body is still fighting its own battle.
