The pain that refused to go away

January 2025. Dominik, a fourteen-year-old boy with a passion for martial arts, was in great shape. Each of his days had a rhythm: training, school, plans for the next competition. The body reacted like a precise machine, until suddenly something jammed in it.

First there was pain. Subtle, almost insignificant, located in the area of the right shoulder blade. Everyone thought it was nothing serious, the usual effect of intense sparring. But the pain did not go away. On the contrary, it grew with each passing day, until it finally made itself known in a form that could no longer be ignored.
A large, hard and clearly palpable lump appeared on the boy's back. Added to this was a high, persistent fever, reaching 39 degrees, not amenable to any medication. What was supposed to be a temporary injury suddenly began to take the shape of a silent threat that was taking away the peace of mind from day to day.

Hope faced fear

When the pain was no longer restful and the fever stubbornly persisted, the decision was made to hospitalize him. Overnight, the world of Dominic and his loved ones shrank to a hospital room, where silence had both fear and hope. The doctors said little. Too cautious to build hope, too experienced to take it away. The results flowed slowly, as if each word and number took a moment to prepare the family for the inevitable. Finally, the diagnosis came. Ewing's sarcoma - a malignant bone tumor and an adversary that chooses no age, place or time.

From that day on, Dominik's life began to resemble a series of rounds in which every breath was at stake. Twelve cycles of chemotherapy and thirty radiation treatments were supposed to prepare his body for the most important stage of this battle - the surgical removal of the tumor.

Each cycle, however, left a mark. There were severe drops in blood parameters, recurrent vomiting, headaches, radiation burns and days when even breathing seemed an effort beyond one's strength. The body grew weaker, immunity declined, and fatigue ceased to be a temporary condition becoming a daily occurrence.
On August 27, 2025, in Wroclaw, Poland, doctors performed an extremely complicated procedure. The tumor was excised along with the ninth rib, parts of the eighth and tenth ribs, and adhesions in the right lung were removed. When Dominik woke up after the surgery, he was breathing with difficulty, but each new breath was proof that he was still fighting. That breath was enough to make him believe it wasn't over yet.

Strength in the family

On a daily basis, Dominic's mother watches over him at his hospital bed. Dad comes over whenever he can. He gave up his job abroad to stay with his younger daughter and take care of the house.
All their energy and strength is focused on Dominik's struggle, because it is not his alone - it is the whole family's effort.
They live in tension between hope and exhaustion. Here nothing can be predicted. One day the results are good, the next they drop dramatically. Once smiles and other times tears. Every morning is a new beginning and always begins with the same question: "How are you feeling today?"

Every day is a struggle

Dominik is a flesh and blood fighter. Although the place and the opponent have changed, the determination and will to win have remained the same. There are days when the most ordinary things turn out to be the most difficult - getting out of bed, eating a meal, walking a few steps without getting out of breath. Yet he doesn't give up.
He believes that someday he will return to training and stand on the mat again stronger than ever. Becausethe disease didn't take away Dominik's dreams. It only took away the time in which he could fulfill them.

We don't choose when to stop, but we can choose the strength with which we move forward again.
