The burden of diagnosis
In November 2024, Bozena was admitted to the Oncology Hospital in Katowice with suspected cancerous lesions in her liver. Histopathological examination confirmed the presence of adenocarcinoma of the biliary tract, infiltrating the portal vein and spreading into the liver parenchyma. Additional tests revealed a mutation in the IDH1 gene, characteristic of an aggressive form of cancer that is resistant to standard chemotherapy.
A biopsy on December 16, 2024 showed liver sections with metastatic adenocarcinoma. Cancerous lesions were also confirmed in the bile ducts and liver cavity. In the following months, Bozena underwent thermoablation procedures (in July, September and October 2025) and13 cycles of chemotherapy and immunotherapy, administered from February to the end of June 2025.
Biliary tract cancer with IDH1 mutation, a contender that requires precise therapy
Despite intensive treatment, a September 2025 CT scan showed progression of liver lesions - both in number and size of tumor foci. At the time, the largest had reached 86 mm.
In the course of further clinical evaluation, doctors determined that the tumor was inoperable, and the extent of the lesions made effective resection impossible.
Bozena was also not qualified for a liver transplant, as the extent of the tumor and the presence of a genetic mutation precluded the success of such treatment.
Opportunity in targeted treatment - Tibsovo drug
The IDH1 mutation opens up the possibility of treatment with the modern drug Tibsovo (ivosidenib), a targeted therapy that works directly on the altered gene and blocks the growth of cancer cells. It is this drug that could stop the progression of the disease and give Bozena a chance to continue living.
The hospital has limited funds for purchasing the drug.The cost of one treatment is approximately €18,000, which exceeds the woman's financial capabilities.
Daily life that has become a struggle
Bożena is being treated at a hospital in Wrocław, where she continues her treatment and diagnostics.She also struggles with depression, which is being treated with medication.
Until recently, she was hiking in the mountains, singing and finding solace in that. Today, her daily life is dominated by the struggle for each new day, for the possibility of starting therapy that could bring a breakthrough.
