Side effects and the enormity of daily challenges

The unreimbursed therapy has been ongoing for six months. An imaging study is scheduled soon to evaluate possible secondary changes in the lymph nodes. The drug itself, so far, is being tolerated well by the body, but alongside it is a parallel daily life full of difficult side effects of earlier chemotherapy and surgery. Anna has developed difficult-to-manage lymphedema on her left side. In addition, he struggles with recurrent joint inflammation, gastrointestinal disorders requiring a specialized diet, inflammation of muscle attachments, post-surgical adhesions and very low immunity. All of this requires constant care from specialists, rehabilitation and ongoing diagnostics. Many of these tests and consultations have to be financed privately, because the waiting time for treatment under the National Health Service is too long. Rehabilitation has become part of daily life and will probably remain so permanently.

Fighting not only the disease, but also everyday life

To cope with increasing expenses, Anna returned to work. Every professional day is a huge effort, as the body can't always keep up with the responsibilities. Anna often lacks strength, but the decision to return was a necessity. Although everyday life brings fatigue and difficulties, a great support and strength remains the children, relatives, friends and all donors who have been accompanying Anna in her fight against the disease from the beginning. A light of hope for Anna

Anna has been taking an unreimbursed drug for three months that gives her hope of victory. The latest imaging results brought long-awaited joy. The secondary lesions have halved in size, confirming the effectiveness of the costly therapy. Although Anna's body is still struggling with the side effects of her chemotherapy, and everyday life is filled with numerous expenses related to treatment and care, she is not giving up even for a moment. The positive results have given her strength and strengthened her in the battle she fights every day with extraordinary determination. A double dose of medicine means double the cost!

In mid-October, Anna completed six cycles of double chemotherapy. The last three doses were extremely difficult. The body grew weaker with each administration, and test results deteriorated so much that doctors postponed the next cycles several times. During this time, Anna was hospitalized several times. Side effects from the last chemo kept Anna from returning to strength for a long time.

Targeted treatment

In November, following a CT scan that showed abnormalities and a PET-CT scan confirming the presence of two secondary lesions on the lymph nodes, the decision was made to implement targeted treatment.

Costly therapy

The standard dose, planned initially, proved insufficient. The decision to double the dose, on the one hand, increases the chance and gives hope, but on the other hand, it means a doubling of costs - from 250,000 zlotys to as much as 500,000 zlotys. Monthly therapy, which initially cost PLN 11,000, now consumes 22,000 zloty.

The funds raised so far secure Anna's therapy only until September 2025. The scheduled end of treatment, with this costly targeted drug, is December 2026❗. February 20, 2025
