Treatment - immediately!
In December 2020, bruises began to appear on Amelka's body, which nothing explained. There was no fall, no trauma, yet the child's skin was becoming increasingly blue. The girl was getting tired quickly, and small petechiae appeared on her neck and hands. Concerned about this, the parents decided to consult the child's condition with a pediatrician.
The results of the morphology ordered left no illusions. Amelka was immediately taken to the Cape of Hope in Wroclaw, where detailed diagnostics began.
Two days later, the diagnosis was made - acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Just five days later, on December 14, the first chemotherapy was started. Until March 2021, Amelka did not leave the hospital. She went through numerous infections, and treatment was repeatedly halted due to oral fungus and recurrent infections.
Tough months and small victories
After three months, Amelka was finally able to return home, but only for a while. A high fever forced the family to return to the hospital immediately. A Brownian infection was found, which meant that chemotherapy had to be interrupted again. At the end of March, the girl was finally able to leave the hospital, but her treatment still required regular visits to the day ward. In May, the second stage of treatment began. Amelka spent a week at home and another week in the hospital.
More infections appeared, this time fungal and bacterial. The girl could not eat, and needed special medications imported from abroad. Despite the suffering, pain and enormous devastation of her body, Amelka bravely endured the treatment. She lost her hair and eyebrows, and her legs refused to obey, so for a time she moved around in a wheelchair. Isolated from the world, she only saw her parents and medical staff
Next steps in treatment
In June, Amelka returned home to gather strength before the third stage of therapy. In the second half of the month, she was again hospitalized, where she was subjected to successive cycles of chemotherapy and lumbar punctures throughout the vacations.
In September, preparations began for radiation therapy involving as many as ten exposures. The treatment proved to be extremely taxing on the body. Amelka's delicate skin suffered severe burns on her head and body, requiring another long stay in the hospital and intensive care by doctors.
After completing radiation therapy, Amelka switched to maintenance treatment at home. She received immunosuppressive drugs, and returned to the hospital every two weeks for follow-up cycles of chemotherapy. This was the rhythm that accompanied her for the following months, until February 2022.
Since then, he has remained under constant monitoring by doctors. She is currently in a five-year protective period, during which every test result is cause for concern. Amelka is also being diagnosed for epilepsy and side effects from intensive oncology treatment.
She needs constant care from a neurologist, endocrinologist, cardiothoracic surgeon, ophthalmologist and dentist.
Everyday life after illness
Although the cancer treatment has been completed, its effects are still present in the life of Amelka and her family. The girl has a history of pleural abscess, making only one lung functional. The other requires constant rehabilitation and monitoring.
Due to her long isolation and numerous hospitalizations, Amelka is dealing with post-hospital trauma and major educational deficiencies. She spent the first grades of elementary school at home, studying remotely.
Mom has completely devoted herself to caring for her daughter. Dad is the sole breadwinner in the family. Also at home is Amelka's five-year-old brother, who is very much affected by his sister's illness. Amelka is nine years old. She enjoys dancing, singing, coloring and playing with her pastry cream. In her eyes you can see childlike strength, which has not been broken even by months of pain.
Let's help Amelka on this road to health and a peaceful childhood. Every zloty is a huge support for this extraordinary being.
