Anxiety that grew along with the pain
It started with discomfort - pain in the knee, which at first did not look threatening. Perhaps sprained, overloaded, maybe it's just temporary - that's what is usually said to a teenager who lives an active life, goes to school, does P.E. exercises and comes home with a backpack full of books.
Each day, however, it got worse. The pain didn't go away, and Amelia began to limp. On top of that, there was redness, throbbing under the skin, and nightly awakenings. Something was not letting up.
Every examination took away hope. X-rays and MRIs led deeper and deeper into a space from which it was difficult to return without a word: cancer.
Diagnosis
Osteosarcoma - a cancer that does not wait, requires a response here and now. From that moment on, Amelia's life changed irreversibly. The everyday life she knew disappeared.
Today, every decision and every day is subordinated to treatment. Chemotherapy that destroys cells unfortunately also destroys the whole body. MRIs that cannot be pushed back. Consultations that cannot be postponed. An operation that is supposed to save - although it is not yet clear what price will come.
Mother and daughter in unison
Amelia's mom doesn't leave her side. She doesn't have a schedule or an agenda - everything is dictated by her daughter's condition. They have to travel, search, wait. For approval, for reimbursement, for a place in the hospital.
Costs, which until now were just numbers, have proven to be a barrier difficult to overcome. Everything has to be paid for: transportation, supportive treatment, diet, medication, rehabilitation, and time passes....
Every contribution is a help
Amelia does not yet know all the side effects associated with the treatment. She does not know how many more times she will hear: "we have to wait." One thing she does know is that she has to fight, and she won't do it without people willing to stand by her side. Every donation is concrete: access to chemotherapy, paid rehabilitation, access to supportive therapy. Every zloty brings her closer to standing confidently on her feet again.
Thank you for being part of this journey.
