We have reached our collection goal!
Together with Bartek Kubkowski, we decided to donate part of the funds raised in the Baltic Swim 2025 challenge to support the treatment of Tomek, who is battling osteosarcoma. Thanks to this joint gesture and the tremendous commitment of thousands of people who supported this extraordinary challenge, the fundraising goal was reached and the bar on Tomek's page turned green! Baltic Swim 2025 is a unique endeavor to attempt to swim 170 kilometers across the open Baltic Sea in 60 hours, with no sleep and no breaks. Thanks to Bartek and the community behind his challenge, this project has become much more than an athletic test of strength - it has become a gesture of support and hope for those who are fighting for health and life. Thank you! November 2, 2025

Minor fall, routine X-ray, dangerous exposure
The story of Tomaszek's battle with the disease began in May 2021. Back then, after a harmless fall from a scooter, a routine X-ray was ordered just to be safe, nothing that would have foreshadowed the drama. Both doctors and family expected at most a fracture: painful but understandable, which would heal in time.
The result of the imaging study, however, raised concern. A disturbing lesion was visible in the tibia. Specialists concluded that it was an aneurysmal cyst, which should be surgically removed. On May 11, 2021, Thomas underwent his first surgery - resection of the cyst and filling of the bone locus with cerumen. It seemed that this was the end of the difficulties, that now all that was needed was time and regeneration.

Unfortunately, The wound was not healing properly. The cerumen did not take, and the operated area began to pus. After five months, another surgical intervention was required. The bone was cleaned and filled again, this time with bone substitute material.
The histopathological results still indicated an aneurysmal cyst of the tibia. The family breathed a sigh of relief. They believed that this time everything was really coming to an end.
Two years of relative silence
Two years of peace. Two years in which the wound had time to heal, and life slowly returned to normalcy. Tom grew, regained his dexterity and faith that the most difficult thing was behind him. However, on December 4, 2023, fate again reminded him of its unpredictability.
During an ordinary game of ball, there was a sharp, piercing pain - completely inadequate to the injury sustained. At the Hospital Emergency Department, an X-ray was taken. The area, which should have recovered a long time ago, showed a cavity and microfracture. With a splint in place and a recommendation for a three-week immobilization of the limb, Tom went home, waiting for a date to be set for another surgery. On January 5, 2024, the tibial cyst was resected with simultaneous filling with bone substitute material and stabilization with wires. The material collected during the procedure was submitted for histopathological examination.
There are distances that are not measured in kilometers, but in longing
From that moment on, everything was subordinated to one thing - the fight for life. Chemotherapy, designated according to the EuraMOS program, began immediately. The next stage of treatment was an operation in May 2024 to remove a fragment of the tibia bone and implant an endoprosthesis.
Return to fitness
Although the treatment was completed, a long period of convalescence began ahead of Tom. It was a time when daily life was filled with arduous exercises, pain and constant pushing of limits imposed by the weakened body. Every step became an effort, and every attempt to regain fitness a test of perseverance and determination.
For many months Tom learned everything from scratch. This required not only physical strength, but also tremendous self-denial and patience. Rehabilitation lasted almost a year and became a daily challenge, a struggle to regain what the disease tried to take away.
Relapse
In July 2025, during the course of ongoing treatment, additional tests conducted indicated the presence of a nodule in Thomas' lung. Doctors ordered a PET scan, which showed the presence of an infiltrating tumor in the soft tissues of his lower leg - exactly where the endoprosthesis had been previously implanted. On October 10,a CT scan already showed multiple lung metastases.

Another, more aggressive chemotherapy was added to the protocol . The family's emotions, fragile after years of constant tension, were shattered to the core with the word that the leg would have to be amputated. This is a decision that cannot be accepted calmly or understood without pain. How to explain to a child that in order to save a life, a part of himself must be sacrificed? How to tell a fourteen-year-old boy that instead of dreams of cross-country riding and freedom, he is facing a struggle more difficult than all his previous ones?
A common struggle - a common longing
Since October 16 , Tomasz, along with his mother, has been staying at the Mother and Child Institute in Warsaw. The boy's dad, although he lives and works far from Szczecin, remains on standby to support the family whenever possible. His sisters, for whom the absence of their mother and brother's presence is particularly difficult, remain at home in Szczecin. On a daily basis, the girls are cared for by their grandfather. His care provides a sense of security, although he cannot fill the void left by the separation.
