Explore the history of

She was hours away from her sixth birthday

On May 13, the day before her sixth birthday, Maja began complaining of severe abdominal pain. The night was marked by wakefulness and painkillers - hoping that it was just a temporary indisposition. In the morning, when the suffering persisted, the parents took their daughter to the emergency room. There it was determined that the source of the pain was constipation. With a recommendation for observation, Maya was sent home.

Looking for the cause

Hours passed, and there was still no improvement. The sight of their daughter suffering in pain did not allow the parents to wait. They reported to a pediatrician, who , suspecting that the source of the ailment might be a kidney - recommended urgent tests. During a repeat visit to the ED , a CT scan, ultrasound and X-ray were performed. The images were alarming. A lesion was noted within the kidney, which was initially thought to be an abscess. With the decision to continue diagnostics, Maja was referred to the urology department in Katowice.

Treatment is already underway - chemotherapy, surgery and more months of fighting

With each subsequent examination, the tension grew, which could not be drowned out. The image obtained from the MRI suggested that the lesion might be cancerous. Within days, a biopsy was performed and a slice was taken for histopathological examination. The result left no doubt - malignant neoplasm of the kidney, Wilms' tumor.

Start of treatment

After receiving the histopathology result, the doctors did not delay a moment. The treatment process was immediately implemented, according to the current oncology protocol:

  • First stage: preoperative chemotherapy - started immediately after diagnosis,
  • Second stage: surgery to remove the entire kidney affected by the cancerous lesion
  • The third stage: postoperative chemotherapy - the extent and duration of which will depend on the results of follow-up tests and how the girl's body responds to subsequent cycles of therapy.

Each of these stages is not only a medical necessity, but also a huge burden on the young body.

Everything else recedes into the background

The past weeks have been a time of tremendous strain for Mai and her family - physically, emotionally, existentially. Today, all their attention must be focused on healing, on every step of this uneven battle. For this to be possible, they need a space free of anxiety about tomorrow - one that allows them to breathe, to make decisions without thinking about bills and shortages. Every gesture of support is more than just help - it's concrete relief for the child and loved ones, who are doing everything they can to ensure that the disease doesn't take away what's most important to them.

Sometimes the greatest gift is not the solution, but that someone next to us holds the burden for a moment with us.
