Update
Changes in Mr. Sławomir's treatment
Recently, Mr. Sławomir's health required re-evaluation by doctors. During treatment, complications related to chemotherapy arose, including grade III neutropenia, anemia, thrombocytopenia, polyneuropathy, and liver toxicity. As a result, it was necessary to transfuse two units of blood, implement fluid therapy, and increase pain management at the clinic. The latest imaging tests brought difficult news. A CT scan showed disease recurrence in the rectal area near the sacrum and enlarging lesions in the lungs. For this reason, the doctors decided to change the treatment regimen from FOLFOX to FOLFIRI.![]()
Effects of treatment and necessary break in therapy
The new chemotherapy regimen is much stronger, which is why there are more severe side effects—vomiting, loss of appetite, and watery stool. Due to the recurrence in a highly innervated area, Mr. Sławomir must take strong painkillers, including morphine and oxycodone. In addition, tests showed second-degree liver toxicity, so after imaging and laboratory tests, doctors decided that a longer break in chemotherapy was necessary to allow the liver to regenerate. The family and loved ones remain in constant contact with doctors and await further decisions regarding treatment. March 10, 2026

When the body begins to demand attention
The first sign was blood appearing during bowel movements. The day that will remain etched in my memory forever is November 30, 2023. The diagnostic process began, and with it came an avalanche of information that left no room for illusions. The diagnosis was clear. Advanced cancer of the lower gastrointestinal tract. From the outset, the disease was widespread.
Treatment without rest
Since spring 2024, Sławomir has undergone intensive radio and chemotherapy. In June, he underwent extensive surgery, which resulted in the creation of a stoma. It was a life-saving operation, but also a moment that forever changed the everyday life of the young man and his family.
In January 2025 , another difficult operation was necessary, this time on her liver. The right side of her liver was removed, along with segment IV. Her body did not have time to regenerate. In March, a vascular port was inserted and palliative chemotherapy was started. The first line of treatment lasted many months. When it stopped producing the expected results, another line of treatment was started in January this year. The treatment continues. Cycle after cycle. No promises. No guarantees.
Questions from children that won't go away
Sławomir has children. Every time he goes to the hospital, they cry. They are afraid that their dad will not come back.
They see the ostomy bag. They see the port under the skin. They are afraid to hug him, lest they cause him pain or hurt him. Sometimes they stand silently by, not knowing how to behave. Sometimes they ask directly if their dad will definitely come home.
What hurts the most is that Dad often doesn't have the strength to play with them anymore, that instead of picking them up, he needs help to get up, walk a few steps, wash himself, and eat a meal.
The disease spares no one emotionally. It also affects children, for whom every day their father is weaker becomes an alarm, a sign of danger. Despite their parents' tender assurances and attempts to protect them from fear, children feel the tension that fills the home. It manifests itself in silence, which contains more fear than words.
The body refuses to obey
Chemotherapy has left him severely weakened. Numbness in his limbs means that Sławomir needs help moving around, washing, and sometimes even eating. Heart failure further limits his strength. Every activity requires the support of another person. Every day is a struggle to maintain balance on the brink of exhaustion.
A family under one roof of fear
The disease robbed Sławomir of his ability to work and his sense of agency. It robbed his family of stability and security. It brought depression, anxiety, and helplessness, which affect not only him, but also his wife and children.
The house became a place of constant vigilance. Waiting for the return from the hospital. Counting the days between treatment cycles. Learning to live in a state of constant tension.
What support is needed
The funds raised will be used to purchase non-reimbursable medications and cover the costs of ongoing treatment. This will allow him to continue his therapy and return home. To his children.
And a father whom his children learn to wait for patiently, counting every moment until he returns home.
