Unobtrusive symptoms did not foreshadow the coming storm
At first, everything seemed ordinary. Henio was a cheerful and curious toddler. One day in September, his mother noticed that his tummy had become hard and unnaturally tense. With concern, she took her son to the pediatrician, convinced that it was just a minor ailment like many in infancy. The doctor reassured. He said it was probably digestive problems and recommended observation.
Days passed, and the symptoms persisted. On October thirteenth there was another visit, this time ending with a referral to the hospital. An ultrasound was performed in Brzeg Opolski, which revealed the presence of a tumor in the abdominal cavity.
A day later, Henio was taken to the Cape of Hope in Wroclaw, Poland, and three days later he was transferred to a hospital on Fieldorf Street, where a bone marrow biopsy from both hip plates, a tumor biopsy and a bone marrow trepanobiopsy from the infant's right hip were performed.
That same evening, a dramatic complication occurred. Bleeding from the tumor filled the abdominal cavity and Henio ended up on the operating table. Doctors drained three hundred milliliters of blood and inserted a drain. On that day, the nine-month-old child rubbed the line between life and death for the first time.
The boundary between hope and fear
After the operation, doctors did everything to stabilize the boy's condition, but his body was too weak to regain composure. On Saturday, while waking up, it was discovered that his intestines were obstructed.
Henio spent the next few days in the intensive care unit. On October twenty-first, he was transported back to Cape Hope. That same night, his condition deteriorated again, and as before, bleeding into the abdominal cavity forced an operation for the second time in such a short time.
Surgeons placed compression slings to stop the bleeding, leaving the abdomen open to intervene again if necessary. The next day, vascular surgeons performed an embolization procedure, closing off the main vessel supplying blood to the tumor. When Hen's condition stabilized, another operation was performed, during which the sling was removed and the abdominal shell was closed.
On October twenty-fourth, the boy was awakened. He was weak, but alive. He was returned to the care of a team of doctors at Cape Hope, and that's when the words were spoken that stopped time. The diagnosis was striated muscle sarcoma.
Small patient, big fight
Henio is only nine months old, and his treatment has just begun. Due to his age, doctors do not recommend radiation therapy, so they decided to start nine cycles of chemotherapy. It will be a long and challenging road.
At the same time, his family is also struggling. Henia's mom is five months pregnant and has to take care of herself and her unborn child.
Dad, to protect his beloved from stress and support his son, has taken parental leave and is not leaving the hospital.
Already in their thoughts is anxiety about the coming moment when the second child is born, as they will be forced to share care and time between the newborn and Hen.
Help Heni grow up
The parents are doing everything possible to give their son the best possible chance of recovery, but without the help of others they will not be able to bear the burden of everyday life. Every donation, even the smallest, becomes a gesture that gives Heni a chance to grow up.
