Update
We believe that with each passing day she is getting closer to overcoming the disease. She still has many challenges ahead of her, but also, we hope, a peaceful and healthy future. September 27, 2024
Antek continues his very demanding and aggravating battle for health. As a result of the treatment undertaken, he has undergone numerous and very severe complications. The entire treatment process was extremely difficult, especially through all the "over the top" twists and turns and illnesses that arose during treatment. Our Warrior's treatment officially ended in April 2023, about two years after diagnosis, then remission was maintained for 10 months. This was the perfect time to devote to rehabilitation and Antek's emotional and intellectual development. However, this was not the end of the worries. Because of the gene mutation, the boy's parents had to come for a bone marrow check-up every three months. One such visit took place in February 2024. The routine check-up brought alarming results, and there were more twists and turns in the brave family's path. Cytogenetic tests showed the appearance of genes that should not be in Antek's body. Thanks to accurate decisions made by doctors several months ago, it was possible to catch the relapse of the disease already at the molecular stage. This resulted in the notification of our Warrior's family to a clinic in Bydgoszcz for a bone marrow transplant. It turned out that the bone marrow donor for Antek could be his older brother! Antek's steadfast family successfully went through the necessary procedure at the Family Court and obtained permission for their older son to become a donor. At the same time, Antek was prescribed new medications aimed at nullifying the multiplication of the defective gene. "We are very hopeful that he will be able to keep the disease in check until the time of the transplant." - tells Antek's Mom Another follow-up visit brought new findings. Doctors disagreed on the diagnosis and, after extensive analysis, concluded that the so-called MRD residual disease was negative, indicating no recurrence. Examining more cells, it turned out that the defective gene was in Antek's blood, and as a result his disease was reclassified from acute lymphoblastic leukemia to chronic myeloid leukemia. "Antek's case is not standard and therefore consultations with foreign centers are ongoing. For the time being, we are in the hospital every month for an in-depth check-up and are waiting in suspense for developments. The fight is still going on. We take what we get and act the best we can!" - describes the situation full of faith and hope Mom of our Warrior The future prognosis is unknown. It is impossible to assess how long the drug used will bring positive results. It is also impossible to say definitively whether the disease will be stopped, tamed, cured. Antek's parents do not lose faith even for a moment, and still very much need our support! Funds donated to Antek's collection will help finance the cost of ongoing treatment, expensive travel to hospitals and doctors, as well as help adapt the apartment to the little Warrior's changing needs. His skirmish began with an inconspicuous incident when he began to limp on his right leg.
His parents' first thought was that he had simply hit his leg while playing with his little brother.
The next few days brought no improvement, so the Warrior and his parents went to the hospital. An ultrasound and an X-ray left no illusions - Antoś had broken his tibia.
He returned home with a plaster splint in place. In the following days, he became increasingly lethargic and lost his appetite. Concerned parents conducted blood tests, and from then on everything went very quickly. From the doctor in Gorzow Wielkopolski they heard words they will not forget for the rest of their lives:
"The guy most likely has leukemia - go to the hematology department in Szczecin."
They didn't wait a moment, they set out right away. In Szczecin, Antek underwent a bone marrow puncture, after which his parents officially learned the diagnosis: it was B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, with a Philadelphia chromosome. After the first blow, immediately came the second as well - our Warrior was classified in the high-risk group.
The road that Antoś went through was very long and winding. He has been fighting his battle for more than a year. He has spent about 300 days in the hospital alone. He also faces many complications, which he endures bravely and does not intend to give up. He would like to fix everything that has "gone wrong" during his treatment so far.
The funds raised will be used for travel to the hospital (located about 100km from where Antek lives), rehabilitation, essential medicines and necessities. The above expenses consume a large part of the household budget, and without financial support it will be difficult for the family to face such a challenge.
We encourage you to support our charge and make voluntary donations to the account. With your help, Antoś has a chance to recover!
