September 2021
It all started in September 2021. It was supposed to be a routine checkup, the kind that would simply confirm that everything was fine. The kind of checkup where you leave feeling relieved and go back to your normal life.
Instead, during the ultrasound, the urologist noticed something concerning: a tumor that was compressing the ureters and the bladder. Shortly thereafter came the diagnosis that changed everything: leiomyosarcoma.
Operations
In January 2023, I underwent my first surgery. The doctors removed the tumor along with my right ureter and implanted it into my bladder. A few months ago, I had another surgery: removal of a pelvic tumor and a rectal resection. Back in the operating room, back to waiting and fighting to recover.
I underwent many procedures during my illness. Each one was a difficult step, but also another stage in this long, demanding journey.
Treatment
The doctors tried various treatments. Each new one offered hope that this time they would be able to stop the disease. Unfortunately, not all of the treatments worked, leaving behind only weakness and more unanswered questions.
Today, treatment is different than it used to be. Chemotherapy in Koszalin has become a part of everyday life, a regular appointment on the calendar that you have to make it to no matter what. It’s about 500 kilometers from home, from daily life, from everything familiar.
Side effects
One of the side effects of the treatment is polyneuropathy. It started with subtle changes: a strange tingling sensation, as if my body had stopped speaking its old language. Later, something more permanent set in: a loss of sensation in the back of my right leg and the foot of that same limb.
Everyday Life
Today I’m at home with my wife, who has been a tremendous support. Her presence gives me a sense of stability in a world that hasn’t been the same for a long time. She helps me with the everyday things, but also during those harder moments when the illness makes itself felt most strongly.
I can't go back to work; my illness has set a different pace for my life and imposed limits that I simply can't overcome.
Before the diagnosis
Before my diagnosis, sports were a daily part of my life. Running, in particular. Long distances, the rhythm of my footsteps, the freedom that began somewhere between the first and last kilometer. It was a time when my body carried me forward and my mind could find peace.
Today, that world has been replaced by something more peaceful: fishing. Silence, water, and patience—which looks different than it used to, but still allows us to be close to one another and to the simple things in life.
Please help me
Treatment is extremely costly, and without support, this journey becomes incredibly difficult to bear. Every bit of help makes a difference. Every gesture becomes part of something bigger: a chance to continue treatment and fight for health.
Thank you so much for your help.
