Can cancer be beaten?

Cancer is not a death sentence. More and more cancer patients are living for many years after diagnosis. Access to modern treatment methods and early diagnosis are key here. Is it possible to beat cancer? Yes, it is possible!

How to fight malignant cancer

Many people, at the mere mention of the word "cancer," imagine a long treatment process and a negative prognosis for the patient. Unfortunately, such a scenario is possible. So is one in which the patient is completely cured. When reading about types of cancer, you can often find information about the long-term survival rates for a given disease. These are just statistics. Many people successfully defy them. Don't believe it? Check out the stories of people who have beaten cancer. You don't have to look far – Marek Kopyść, founder of Cancer Fighters, defeated stage 4 Hodgkin's lymphoma. The Victory Bell is being rung by other beneficiaries of our foundation, including Oskar, Paulina, and Ewa.

You can find stories of cancer patients and our charges here and on the foundation's social media profiles.

Is malignant cancer curable?

Yes, cancer can be curable. A diagnosis of malignant cancer does not always mean a poor prognosis. Breast cancer is a perfect example of this – in its pre-invasive stage, it offers the patient a chance of a complete cure. In the case of invasive breast cancer, the prognosis can also be good, and the chances of curing the cancer are high. In people without lymph node metastases, the five-year survival rate is 90%.

When cancer metastasizes, complete recovery is much more difficult and in many cases impossible. However, it is worth noting that thanks to the possibilities offered by modern medicine, cancer is increasingly treated as a chronic disease. The treatment implemented allows to slow down or stop the development of the disease, alleviate the symptoms and side effects of cancer, ensure the patient's comfort and prolong their life.

Does early detection of cancer increase the chances of survival?

Early diagnosis increases the chances of curing cancer. Detecting cancer in its early stages, without metastasis, gives a better prognosis and usually involves less invasive treatment for the patient. However, this is not the only factor that determines whether cancer is curable.

What affects the chances of curing cancer?

What characterizes cancer therapy is the individual response to treatment. The patient's prognosis is the result of many factors. One of them is the type and stage of cancer. The degree of histological malignancy, the patient's attitude and motivation to undergo treatment, their cooperation with medical staff, and compliance with specialists' recommendations are also important. Is it possible to beat cancer? The prognosis is also influenced by the patient's general health, the presence of any comorbidities, age, and nutritional status.

How to increase your chances of beating cancer – diet

The patient's nutritional status has a significant impact on the recovery process and the implementation of subsequent stages of treatment. What are the chances of curing cancer in a malnourished and dehydrated person? Unfortunately, they are lower. If a patient is malnourished, it not only affects their overall health and strength, but also increases the risk of possible complications from treatment and may affect their eligibility for, for example, surgery.

Every cancer patient should receive individual nutritional recommendations. The treatment process very often causes side effects such as loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and malabsorption. A properly selected diet provides the body with the necessary nutrients and energy. Patients are usually advised to follow an easily digestible diet, and products for special medical purposes may also be helpful. If necessary, parenteral or enteral nutrition and pharmacotherapy are introduced.

How to fight malignant cancer?

Several treatment options are available in Poland: surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, hormone therapy, and targeted therapy. Depending on the case, one of these methods is used, or specialists propose combination therapy, combining several of them. Insured persons are entitled to reimbursement for oncological drugs, as well as certificates and allowances for cancer patients. Unfortunately, these are not always sufficient.

Many modern treatment methods are not available under the National Health Fund (NFZ) and must be paid for out of the patient's own pocket. The same applies to travel costs, rehabilitation equipment, and nutrition. The solution is fundraising for cancer patients and financial support from foundations. Since we have already touched on the subject of support, people with cancer very often experience a decline in mood. They may develop mental disorders, including anxiety and depression, which not only affect their mental health but also their physical health, and may hinder treatment. Patients' stories clearly indicate the need for support from loved ones and a sense of connection with other cancer patients.

How to beat cancer? Discover the power of support

Emotional support, although it does not directly affect treatment outcomes, is extremely important for the course of treatment. Cancer patients who can count on the help of loved ones, therapists, and support groups are more motivated to fight cancer. They feel that they are not alone in this fight. They feel understood. The chances of curing cancer in such a person may increase.

The motivation of loved ones will also be useful in keeping the patient physically active, of course in a manner appropriate to their current state of health. Exercise is the best way to take care of your mental health, boost your immune system (so important during cancer treatment!), and maintain physical fitness.
